History of Sydney Waterways

-

Broken Bay/ The Hawkesbury River.

The Hawkesbury/ Nepean river system, emptying into the Broken Bay estuary, runs from the far south west of Sydney right around the far west and curving out towards the sea which it meets in the far north of the city. It has two seperate names because it was explored in two different directions by two different people, therefore being known as the Hawkesbury from the grose river junction seaward. The waters of both rivers are fed by the Blue Mountains national park, with the Wollemi national park also being part of the Hawkesbury catchment area. The river also passes through newly urbanised and intensively farmed parts of Sydney. Heavy rain in either of these areas affects fishing in Broken Bay, with pollutant counts higher than normal in stormwater and sediment run-off, but also with the differing percentages of fresh/salt water in Broken Bay proper and the large output of fresh water into the sea encouraging some species to go on the bite.
