As most of you are aware, I have made my mission to catch a 20 KG Kingy inside Sydnry Harbour. And today I went in search of that dream! :)

As it turns out, I was late on th water but not by much.

I made a beeline for a coule of spots that had been shown to me. After a solid hour of flicking jigs for no result on the resident Kings! Seeing as this didnt go to well , I rounded up some livies in the form of yakka. With a few Livies aboard, I made for Blufish as that was a hot tip given to me last night. Unfortunately the tips didn't pan out.

Started heading back in and had a good look at Quaranteen Head. As there was a bit of current running out, and there was someone already on my spot  a drift was called for. It wasn't the best drift, but it was sufficient so that I could work along my preffered drop-off.

Didn't last very long there. With a lively livey doing its stuff down deep, it was only minutesd before I had the first half hearted tug on the line. Next tug...and the line felt heavy. And then the reel screamed.

WOOHOOO!!!!

As last time, I had a an audiece that was cheering me on.

Didn't take very long and I had a nice lil 63-64 cm Kingy flapping on the deck!

After a bit of revival, he kicked out of my hand solidly, and is assured of being caught once more! :D

Incidentally...this one seemed to take longer to revive than others I have caught or released.

Picture can be wiewed here!

Good stuff Joe :P , I managed a couple today in broken bay trolling bibless minnows and rapalas. All were undersized but still good fun. Had one fish hit the lure so hard, the line slipped off the shitty okuma bail roller onto the plastic part and melted the plastic it ran so fast, of course the line parted quickly. Had no chance of stopping it anyway on 8lb gear.

Great work Joe.

What class line would you recommend for Kingies 50 - 70 cms?

I'm the last guy that you should ask for recommendations Daniel. My kingie encounters can be counted on one hand!  Having said that, if you are good with your gear, and know its limits, then I reckon 10-15 lb gear should do the trick.
Then again, it would be hard live-baiting with gear that light. I have been using 8KG braid 'cos I'm hoping for the 15 KG bruiser to make it to dinner!

Good work Joe, you're getting the king thing sussed now obviously.

Spanker, we got stuck into about a dozen kings last week in the 60-71cm range on 8-10lb Fireline. We also dropped a lot of fish while fishing the light gear.

C'mon Joe don't be modest now, anyone who has landed an 80cm model is surely entitled to bragging rights :D

I had been thinking 10kg for 60 - 80cm kgs so I am glad you have set me straight. Thanks Swoff, althugh I think that would be to light for me.

Kind of embarressing but I have bought a few rods at K-mart recently when they had 25% off. You can get a rod for bugger all there, so I got a boat rod for my old shimano TR200g. I have it loaded with 10kg mono but have been thinking of going down a line size as I never catch anything on it that comes close to needing that breaking strain. 14lb sounds good. I haven't tried fireline - would you guys recommend it?

I find I catch most of my fish on a 4kg spin stick off the rocks but am trying to broaded my catch beyond tailor and bream. As i rarely have time to get out learning off you blokes has been a winner.

Cheers

Good onya Dad

Had a fish off the stones at Winnie bay. Saw plenty of kings following lures and had my only livie smashed within ten seconds however no hook ups. Maybe next week.

I'm a fan of the fireline but I've found I've had to let the drag off a bit due to the reduced stretch factor of the fire compared to the mono... but I've been going better with the fireline than the mono recently
