View Full Version : What Reel??
Hi every1
I really need some help in chosing the right reel @ the right price, so what better way than to ask those with heaps more knowledge than i could ever imagine :D
I have a 6' Penn Slammer rod that i want to set up for Kingies/Jewies etc.
I currently have an old surf rod reel on there but want a reel that i can use specifically for this fishing.
So where do i start when looking for a reel?? I will be honest and say that i dont want to spend a fortune on a reel, just something reliable.
There are just so many options :?: :?: :?:
Please help
Confused :? (aka Roy)
Roy, what class line were you thinking of using, and what line weight is the rod capable of handling? Will it be mono or braid? ANd will the bulk of your fishing be with baits or artificials?
I know it may sound like a lot of Questions, but the answers will all help determine which reel will be generally better suited to your application!
A quick answer, for a generally decent all-rounder would have to be a Shimano Aeranos. Top little reels, and can be loaded with braid or mono, and have a very decent drag! Should be able to pick one up, depending on size, for about $60!
Never too many questions :)
Line weight - the rod holds up to 15kg
Mono or Braid - ????? not sure, opinions pls
Pretty much baits.
Would not want to spend anymore than $150
Hope this helps
Does the $150 budget include the line? Depending on how much braid you put on, it may cost you $50 just for the braid!!!! As far as the rod being rated up to 15KG, I would take that with a grain of salt. From my experience, I would rate it at about 8-10KG!
A Shimano Symetre is a decent reel and has a good drag. That can be had for about $150. Daiwa BG 60 is a tuff little reel for about $190. Daiwa Laguna is decent for a $150.
And then there would be the other brands...  Penn, Pflueger, Shakespeare...They all make decent reels.
Looks like you need to get to a tackle store and start playing!
Thanks Jo
Just looking for some help/opinions to start me on the right track
Roy
What I can suggest for you is to grab your rod and head to your local tackle shop. get them to show you all the reels that fit in your budget and then get them to show you some reels just above your budget. You may find an extra $50 if it can be afforded will probably get you a much better reel.
Pick the reels that you like the best and put them on the rod. After trying them all out you will know which is the best reel.
Cheers
Lee
Lee's advice is good regarding taking the rod to the tackle shop and matching it up with a few reel options. Just make sure it's a decent store with a good range of gear.
The Plueger Contender is a great little reel, tough as nails and very affordable. (Can't think of the RRP now though)

Thanks for those tips.
Funny, huh, would never of thought of taking my rod to the tackle shop
Looks like if I'm not on the Hawkesbury on saturday, i will be in a tackle shop somewhere :!:
