I got to Figtree Bridge, no sign of Cam, my partner for the morning. So I drag the yak down rocks to the small flat and rig it up. Check my leaders to find one frayed so replace it. Cam arrives. All aboard.

Cam is a local and suggests some nearby flats. We flog them with sps for lots of hits and a couple of tails munched but no hookup. Move on for much the same result.

Cam asks what suggestions I have. Based on a Maritime map of the area, I had two spots to try in Cunninghams Reach. The first was barren. The second looked good - small flat, small feeder creek, mangroves, outside bend of river, steep drop off and some weed. First drift Cam came up tight on a 30cm bream. Next drift I pull a decent (around 45cm) flattie into the boat only to lose it overboard after I had unhooked it (curse that forgotten net). We flogged it some more for some undersized flatties and a chopper and a few lost tails. Then I came up tight on a fish with a bit of weight. Seemed a bit quiet so I called it for a flattie. Then it went ballistic and showed a big flash of silver. With the drag screwed up tight I just had to hold on while it took a little line then just pulled as hard as it could until it had nothing left. 32cm to the fork making it a new PB.

We fished some more there and a few other spots for no result.

3" bass minnows did all the damage. Cam got his on a pearl/olive and I got the lizard on a smelt and bream on a pumpkinseed, both using my favourite 1/16oz Gamakatsu 211 head.

It was overcast all the time and it rained some of the time. But it wasn't anywhere near yesterday's 44C so was very comfortable on the water. A great day out, even allowing for the lost lizard.

Good work Dave. :D

I've heard a few LC reports over the last week, I'll have to get up there this week if I can pull myself away from the pelagics.
