View Full Version : Balmoral/The Spit 6/1
G'day fellow FFR, hope you all had a good Chrissy/ New Year.
just got back from a morning session on Middle Harbour without much success. Picked up my mate for The Spit and headed to Balmoral were we picked up two squid in no time. Tried to drift Balmoral but the wind was blowing to hard so we headed down to Clontarf/The Spit for a few more drifts with only a few baby bream. The river is extremely dirty at the moment especially around Roseville, although the water temp is pretty high around 24C.
Cheers
Blacky
Balmoral seems the spot for squid at the moment. Wombat & I got a couple of kingi-candy size units very quickly on Tuesday. It was fascinating to also watch a large calamari tentatively attack the jig several times right under Gunboat.
Cheers, Darryl
Thanks for the heads up Blacky...I'll be out there again tomorrow.
Apparently another really good spot for squid is right under the Spit brigde. They seem to be prolific under the first 2 spans on the northern side. I haven't ever got any there, but other have!
I've fished under the bridge once. Couldn't pick up any squid during the day but as soon as the sun went down they came out thick and fast. I caught 6 in 5 minutes. Definetly a place to try when the current isn't moving.
Did it all over again this Saturday Blacky. Couldn't raise any squid, but the Tailor were fun while they lasted in the morning.
I took most of my Tailor on a green striped Raider in 20 GM, while my mate was casting a straight chrome slice and he wasn't getting a zac. The Tailor were feeding on 2-3 inch whitebait. They were flying out of their gobs when they hit the deck!
I got into the tailor this morning at the mouth of Middle Harbour. I was using a 7g pink searock. A mate on another yak was using 3'' bass minnows and changed to a slug when the plastics lasted as long as George Bush in a library. Fish a cast but only around 25cm. Hooked something more substantial but the hooks pulled. Fish sounded after about half an hour. A lot of fun on bream gear.
Dave, were you and your mate into the kingis off Manly last Tuesday morning?
I wish. Can't get my son up early and I won't go outside on the double kayak without an extra paddler.
