hey fellas jus woke up headed up to the erarring power station near morrisset , usually cant fish the concrete bridge area but we walked towards the end near the beach right at the end of the canal were the the bottom is very sandy with some kelp patches, every time we fish the area we end up with a mixed bag of bream, tarwine and whitting , and hundreds of throw backs in one outing, but yesterday no bream or tarwine but lots very big fish jumpin around i mean big sometimes it sounded like kids jumpin in the water!! so we get our first bite wat looked like an ordinary bream bite once hooked was very fast n heavy and snapped our 5kg line? then about 10 mins later my mate has a very small touch on the rod then stopped for 10 seconds the rod the jus buckles an arches over after a few minutes the lline snapped 5kg line:ranting2: , my mate didn get a chance to loosen his drag thats how fast an heavy it was ?? we narrowed it down to three suspects mr jew, stingray or shark but been fishin near the power station an never heard of jews or large rays anyone had any similar experiences there ????

nice omz, sounds like the fish jumping were mullet and they were probably getting belted by big jewies. That could be what the big noises were..... Jewies love to shadow the mullet schools, they r an easy feed. Personally i've never heard of them there, but no doubt they would be about. What was the bait you were using? Could have also been a big tailor and it bit through the line, or even an eel or similar....

i mean worms an hawkesbury prawns, the prawns were the ones that got hit. the odd thing here this place is boiling with bream an tarwine, so i decided to take a few newbies down there n showem we really do catch fish an have fun :headbang: at doin it but last night was a lil embarrasing:ranting2: . i was hoping to get info maybe off some of the other members here, the part of the river is apart of the macqaurie lake so we jus kept guessin as to what this mystery fish:orcawhale: might be ?????

The power stations at lake maquarie are full of all sorts, (big) blackfish, bream, Tarwhine & taylor. The you get the mystery fish, These concist of jew, jacks, big eye & silver trevally & who knows what else, not to forget that the lake is full of bull sharks.
All the rain may have pushed anything looking for a little warmer water out of the lake & into the p/stations.
could have been anything,.
Don't forget they are only a dawn till dusk option, or security may fine you & take all ya gear!!!

Some years ago we had reports of some Tuna coming right into the back of Port Hacking where some lucky guys managed to catch some. As I recall ET was one of the guys.
That's the great thing about fishing, you never know what you might strike next time you go out!

Your not wrong Imnotafish.

The hot water outlets seem to be a little oasis in the desert of warm water species. It seems that all these warm water species that travel down on the warm currents in summer and get stuck in places like lake Maquarie, retreat to the hot water outlets of power stations to live out the winter!

The fact that you can pull up in July at a hot water outlet in the lake and be in with a chance of Mangrove jack is awsome!

Everyone should give it a go, I know this thread has inspired me to get back up to the lake.
