Sorry to be the bearer of bad news fisho's But I just heard a rumor that the NSW Minister has or is about to sign off on the introduction of king fish traps AGAIN!. I have a friend who is close to the situation and he phoned me tonight.
It's Bull#@$%. can not believe it!!!:jumping red:
The Pro Fishos are now getting over $8.00 a kilo for kingy's since the traps had gone instead of $2.00.
And every Fisho got to taste the sight of big kings for once. I hope this is a bad rumor and we all can sleep easy, I have my spies working hard. Does anyone else have contact with any NSW Gov't Auth????:ranting2: :ranting2:
Please tell me this is not correct!!!!
They can't take my Hoodlums away again.:eeek:
Hoodlum
I hope you are wrong! The Kingfish population has only recovered in NSW waters, to bring them back now would be stupidity!

Can u believe it???
I'll phone a few journo's in the morning. I am going to turn the heat up on the Minister. If he thinks he can slide this through without us finding out, he better think again.

Hoodlum, hopefully its not true but i think it is just a rumour.
There are a few members of the house of reps that would have made this all big news in the forums had it of been true....We would have heard...

Netic, We all hope,
But something stinks as my Tomato sauces are a heinz variety. They have been very good in the past. And that's why haoodlum is a nervous KIngy.

In a letter to the minister late last year, we asked him flat out to deny the rumours that traps would be allowed when the 5 year ban was up. He categorically stated that they WOULD NOT be re-introduced, and acknowledges the fact that it would be political suicide for him to re-introduce them.

Bloogy typical, as soon as the election has been run promises are being broken....political sucide means nothing after an election has been won. We all need to be vocal and ensure the promise is not gone back on...who's hearin me?
We are all hearing you and stand ready to do battle when needed!
Priority No 1, kill this off at birth or suffer the consequences.
If anyone hears anymore post details immediately, in the meantime everyone should call their local member and start putting on some pressure, believe me, a ground swell of objection from a large number of constituents can and does make our pollies sit up and take notice!
Also, letters to the Minister from as many people as possible will help.

Haji, I know you would be danm good at this type of stuff any chance you could draft something and post it that we could just insert our name into?
this is going to suck!
we should start up a petition and pass it through all the forums any of us members use.

The petition thing is a great idea if anything like this that will effect our recreational fishing becomes fact.....
We all now have to pay for a lisence to fish so we should have the right to demand something be done to protect what in effect we are paying for to be looked after by the government. They should be looking out for our right to good quality recreational fishing.
Boys i think we are getting a bit ahead of ourselves, nothing has been confirmed and trust me the powers that be do know how rec fishos feel.
A petition although a great idea may not be needed, i am nearly positive that this is just a rumour and nothing else.....finally the kingfish stocks are really growing with some great sizes and high number of catches each year...everyone is getting a peice of them.....
I think what we have to do is promote C & R more when it comes to Kings...each year god knows how many kings are caught in sydney by rec fisho's.......i would say thousands......it just 50% of these were released they would be allow to grow thus helping the sizes grow and give us bigger kings each year and they would be allowed to breed......so the following year we would have an additonal 5,000 kings here....
Too many kings are killed each year and too many undersized kings are taken home and not released, that should be a big focus....this small little thing we can do will ensure the kingfish stocks remain strong so one day our kids and grandkids can catch these great fish..
I can imagine how our parents had it in the 80's.....big 100kg YFT being caught at the peak 10kms out..... and 15 kgs kings being caught at random off sydney....unfortunately the traps and all the crap we threw in the water changed all this but what we have today can be here forever.
Back in 1788......a long time ago...when the endeavour first came...they noted YFT being caught at sow and pigs.....they use to catch them there for food.....now imagine that...30kg YFT at sow and pigs...thats what wa natural in our waters before we screwed it up.
Lets allow our kids to see how we fished this decade and not just imagine how we fished

Here here OZ, stories of YFT and BFT so thick you could walk on their backs all the way to sydney. It can happen once again if EVERYONE just chills out and enjoys the chase as much as the catch (Ive even seen YFT in the harbour so I know that they can and do come inside occasionaly). Dean Butlers retort to his article a fortnight ago re: Marlin Live baiting is an interseting one- I suggest you have a read in this months F.W mag.
In it he promotes the idea that in an age of instant gratification many people have lost sight of what fishing is supposed to be about. He puts forward the idea that fishing should be more centred on the aquacistion of knowledge, developing your plannning skills, paying attention to detail, learning to read natures indicators and developing patience and skills. The idea is then put forward that a lot of rec fishos now just hop in their fancy new boat with their fancy new gear and fancy new electronics and just pull up and get their fish. The essence of fishing has been erodeded, it then becomes akin to shooting pigs in a barrel. Seeing some blokes on the kings during summer its hard to disagree with some of his sentiments.
Better management practices have shown that simple mesures can result in radical improvements. Examples are the Salmon boom and the kingfish boom, even the recent revival of the YFT and SBFT show that a little less greed from EVERYONE can have really postive effects on the fishery. But its a bit like the water crisis. Once the dams begin to fill up again are we going to return to the days of being carefree with our water? All fishermen need to adopt a conservation mind to protect the fishery and not sit there and say its someone elses problem.
Have a go at this next summer, I challange you to see if you can do it, for every fish you catch throw 2 back. If you can then good on you, your on the road to protecting the resource we all share. If you cant then dont throw stones.

Hey Netic, I don't feel anyone was saying to do it now we're only saying the petition thing is a good idea and if we needed to do something when anything like this becomes fact.
From what I have read in the posts no-one is getting too excited mate.:coool:Just voicing our opinions as you have. All is good we just want to be ready when the time comes and knowing what the government is like that time will come!
Cheers

Hey Netic, have another read of my post, I wasn't saying to do it now I was only saying the petition thing is a good idea and if we needed to do something when anything like this becomes fact could we all work together on it.

Jason, mate no need to get defensive....
.my post was agreeing with nearly everything that has been said but trust me the kingfish traps are not coming back and there are more important things to be concerned about.
For example....there were confirmed reports that a commercial fisherman netted tonnes of kingfish of Bluefish Point earlier this year, now that should be something to worry about...not a rumour that has no weight.
The sad truth is this thread actually started the rumour of traps coming back, i have had people asking me if the traps are coming back...i said why would you think that??? they said there mate saw it on a forum that they are.......
But it is just that fellas.....a rumour and if we wanna petition anything lets petition things that are happening now...definately happening....marine parks, The pro's raping Pittwater, etc......and lets not allow rumours to get bigger then they are because it helps nobody to discuss a rumour here as all it does is worry people.

Hey Guys.
Ok there are some good points being made here, and i gotta say im glad to see concerned fishos thinking about the future of our fishery. Firstly can i say I highly doubt there will be any re intro of floating fish traps. The management of nsw fisheries is improving and tho a long way from what we might call sustainable (with lots of tuna for recs each year etc) is at least actively being managed. The banning of commercial fishermen from botany bay was an early step in a different understanding of our fisheries by the DPI. Marine parks and other zones are all examples of this.
Economic cost benefit analysis's are being done by DPI and the general consensus is that recs now contribute as much more $ per kilo of fish than commercials do, so our say has increaced as a result.
If we as recs play the game right and C&R fish we dont intend to eat etc then we will get a bit even a bit more kudos from fisheries. And our Kingy populations will stay high, and we can get arrow squid at the spit all season through etc etc. The harbour this year was a good test for the impact we recs have on certain species and you could definately see a decline in heavily targeted species as the season went on. A lot of our fishing future is really controlled by us....
So its true we can and probably should petition fisheries when things arise that are of major impact to us, like caulerpa weed spreading in pitty or kingy netting inside estuaries etc etc, but i dont know whether any of this has much impact.

Well we all can get off the soap box! I was speaking to Ian shue at the boat show, He too had heard the rumours ,he asked the minister last thursday at the show. tO BE BLUNT no way!!! No king fish traps in the harbour!!!!! for a very long time to come. There are still traps 5kms off the shore but are not harming stocks.
