aftertaking your advice previously i have started to look at second hand boats and nearly bought a second ahnd brooker yesterday as a matter of fact, only someone else beat me to it. not to worry as i then went to another boat shop to se what they are new tofind out i dould of got it newfor an extra 1000 bucks, albeit minus paint and a bimini. but do any of you out there have a brooker- would like to here how you rate them or should i still go for a millenium hull from quintrex- bearing in mind that it will be used for harbour/ bay fishing with the occasional tip outside when weather permits ie when its the tasman lake not sea. all help is appreciated.:pottytrain1:

Hi Hairy
I think that most fishos would opt for the Quintrex every time, better hull, better built and better resale value.

If I recall correctly a number of members recommended that you look for a used glass boat rather than alluminium. From my own experience you get more "bang for your bucks" with a glass boat and can pick up some real bargains. Especially if you look in country editions of the Trading Post where you can often pick up real gems. I got my Seafarer Viking from Balina for $8,500.00 with a good 90 HP Evinrude and a one owner, always garaged boat.

Also, the glass boats being a little heavier than the tinnies tend to be better in any sort of a chop or rocking sea and they do not suffer from corrosion.

There are a number of glass boats that can truly be called "classics" for reason of their performance, built quality and overall reputation. The Seafarer V-Sea is one of the best examples and you would go a long way to find a better boat for the price. At 4.74M they are an ideal size for estuary fishing and can be taken out for near shore outside fishing on a reasonable day. The hull is great in a following sea which is most important in a small boat (not often found in an alluminium boat).

Other top 2nd hand boats (from my personal experience) are the older Savage boats (built like a brick s#%^*house) Haines Hunter and Cruise Craft.

Hope the above will assist you to make the right choice for you.:luck:

Hairy, used to sell both brooker and Quintrex from the boat yard, will usually cost a little more for the quintrex but you are in my opinion getting a boat that will hold its value better. The brooker's we had in the boat yard visually weren't as well finished as the quintrex, structurally if you can overlook the minor differences they are very similar. The main difference in the finish was the welding, quintrex's were neater but both were solidly built.

Haji, fibreglass may pose the weight issue when towing for hairy as he is using a small front wheel drive 4cyl.

Hairy now would be a great time to get a good deal from boat yards, its pretty quiet for them now and as Topipperty said in his new thread on buying fishing gear there are some bargains around, give the salesman an offer almost too stupid to accept and see where they will go! Just a little insight, the 14ft Southwind alloy boat we used to sell with 40hp yamaha 2 stroke engine, battery in box, bimini, paint, roller bollard, bow rails, Garmin fish finder, Marine radio, Safety gear, anchor and chain/rope, rear seat, nav lights, felk trailer, all rego's in summer would sell for approx $22,000 in winter we sold for $18,000.....Theres a lot of margin in boats mate as theres planty of things that profit can come off to reduce the price...shop around and stir things up you will eventually find what you're looking for and you will get the peace of mind of having a warranty.

Good luck mate.

not really, getting a mates boat while he goes to NZ for 6months for work. should be pickin it up next week. i gotta clean it up a bit but thats ok as it gets me on the water and i find out what i like and dont for when i do get a boat. got some mods planned which hes cool with as he thinks they need doin to but is to lazy o do himself, things like cutting in an anchor well- any ideas? - and changing the rod holder placement, front casting deck and whatever else i think of and care to do- prob a live bait tank at some stage and a side console of some sort for the sounder.

Hi Hairy, put up some pic's of the boat and I'm sure we can throw some ideas at you on the mods you are looking at doing.
