Hey guys, new thread to help out those who aren't too familiar with the beach scene and for our new mate HSV!
I will leave the rigging side for someone who has fished beaches more than myself.
The basics of finding a good spot. Gutters-look for the area of water where the waves either aren't breaking or don't break too often. These areas are usually not too far from the beach and are a lot deeper and generally will have rip's (aras again where the waves aren't breaking) at either end where the incoming water (waves) escapes back out to sea.
Gear you will need is a rod of 10ft+ and a good sized spinning reel or sidecast reel(Alvey). A piece of PVC pipe for a rod holder is also recommended to keep your reel out of the sand.
Baits; Best is what you will find at the beach or nereby lake/river; mullet, prawns, taylor, squid, worms, nippers are generally what you will find. For frozen baits you can use pilchards, prawns, squid, whitebait, squid....Fresh or live baits are highly recommended. Strip baits-Fillets of fish like slimy mackerel, mullet, taylor cut into strips bout 2-5cm wide and 10-15cm long (or to suit your hook size) usually work well at beaches.
Tide wise at a place where there is a lake / river that runs into the sea(eg north entrance-central coast) near your beach I would recommend the outgoing tide as this sends all the food out and attracts the fish to areas like the gutter where you will be fishing. The larger fish will usually hang/cruise around the gutters waiting for the food to come along then they eat it.
I'm not the best beach fisherman and I know there's plenty of guys here who will be able to expand on my limited knowledge.
