Hey guys i was just wondering whats a good combo for me, i want it for rock and beach fishing something good but not very expensive . Something that i can use for jews and kings and just allround rock and beach fishing..........
HSV, a good combo that will suit you is a 7ft or 8ft rod, or similar, with a 6000 series size reel on it. Be it from Penn or Daiwa or Shimano, we all know the BTR are great reels, but there are others.
For fishing off the wharves in Sydney i use a 12ft BeachRod, as i feel you need to cast far into the channels for jews. Then if fishing places like Cliftons or the likes, i use the same reel but on a 7ft or 8ft rod.
You dont really need an expensive reel to fish Sydney harbour, i have been fishing it for years with a 6000 Daiwa that cost $60, and its accounted for many jews and a few Kings also, plus Salmon and other fish.

Thanks mate ill give that combo a go......

Plenty combos about HSV. And plenty of Rods too!
The Prices are so cheap right now.
You can't go wrong. I noticed your from Bankstown.
Go into that fisho store on the corner bend of chapel and canterbury rd he is good to haggle with .
. If you want to spend a little more but get more advice I would go to Complete angler at Villawood, just past the Mocarno set on woodville rd. Ask for Pat he is great. Your lucky you live close to some excellent stores and staff.

Good luck with your gear HSV, whatever you get will do the job....For a GP rod look for something 9-10ft long and get a shimano reel. Just an idea, look at the shimano JHX reels relatively inexpensive but work well. Maybe have a look around at a few stores including Big W to see what you will get for your money. Feel free to ask what we think of them, once you have some rods/reel picked out ....Its in our best interests to get you into the best gear for your budget cause then you will catch more fish and post more photos.

Both stores you have mentioned are tops, i know the owners of both and both will help you out! The guys at bankstown are cheap if you ask me! They dont knowme by name but they know me by face.
You will do good there!
As for Compleat Angler, Patty is a top bloke, he will do anything for ya. Mick owns it and is great to bargain with too, get on their mailing list and they have mad sales throughout the year.

Mate, thats goingto get you one hell of a combo.....will be interesting to see what others would recommend but maybe you could consider getting 2 combos for that sort of money......1 as a snapper combo that will double up for spinning with a high gear ratio reel, the other for beach/rocks with slower but more heavy duty reel. Have a search around on the net for specials. Imnotafish and Sydfish told me about some good shimano combos out at the moment...have a look at these threads for some ideas from the guys in the know: http://www.sydneyfishfinder.com.au/sffforum/showthread.php?t=1575
have a good read of all the threads in the tackle section....plenty of good advice there

i got a okuma force beach rod, it is great, i only used it bout 5 times and caught a 58 cm salmon, and a few flatheads, it is great, wen me,my dad and my uncle were fishing off the beach this rod was the best, it cast the farest and hold the fish better, it is a 3.6 meter long and got a solid tip, but reel wise i use a 8000 penn power spin which does the job ok, but not the best, maybe a 6500 shimino bait runner would be better :headbang: :headbang:
hope this helps mate :congrats:

Ok HSV here we go with my two cents worth.
If you want a rod for rock and beach you must get a 10 foot minimum with 12 foot optimum, for safety and distance especially if off the rocks.
$500 will get you a top of the line combo.
Best beach/rock rods about are snyder glas.
fiberglass rods made in brissy, retail for around $180-200
they come in everything from 3 wrap and 4 wrap (for blackfish whiting and bream - to 9 wrap (for big jews and kings.)
the wraps refer to how many wraps of f'glass - so the 9wrap is much heavier.
a seven wrap is about the best all round for average to bigger fish like bigger salmon or small kings etc
stick to 5 wrap or lower for bream flatties etc.
so a 12 footer is 144 inches long therefore a seven wrap 12 footer would be a (in a multi taper) MT-7144 snyder glas or similar from another brand (wilson do some as do many others)
A 4 wrap 12 footer is a 4144 etc etc.
You probably want one with a sand spike too, so final rod length would be 13'6
as for reels if you want a spinning reel you need to know whether you want to be spinning off the rocks or bait fishing. bait fishing work towards a shimano baitrunner say a 6500b, for spinning you need a higher speed retrieve reel.
Overheads are prob not the best to start with, but ALVEYS are possibly the best.....
They dont rust, they r submersible, they clean easy and there r heaps to choose from. And they r not too expensive.
for $500 i reckon you could get 2 set ups, using alveys and snyder glas rods
say one 5 wrap (or even 4 ) with a 500 or 550 size alvey and one seven or 8 wrap with a 650 size alvey.
That will cover most bases.

HSV, what Wayno is saying about the Okuma reel is from his experience using it for big Jews (over 15kg) If you get to the stage where you are keen to tackle bigger harder fighting fish you may consider upgrading your set-ups to suit the fish you are targetting when the time comes but for now I'm sure your gear will do the job just fine for you.
As Sambo/FPV said it will do the job fine but clean your reels down after each use. An old mate of mine had troubles with his Okuma's a few years ago cause he never cleaned his gear so be sure to keep it clean and try to avoid submersion in salt water. Both your reels are with baitrunner mechanisms, be careful at the beach mate-they hate sand.
Good luck mate
