View Full Version : best compromise for bream and flathead

I was hoping to get some advice on a good setup that would work for both bream and flathead in the estuary. Without rigging up separate rods or reels what would be the best compromise? Currently I use a light Uglystik with 6lb Hercules Braid main line and 8lb fluorocarbon leader. I try both SPs and bait, and fish of land as well as inflatable. Any thoughts or advice? Perhaps I could vary leaders?
cheers
Sean
Your on the right path. The same rigs and bait will generally take both species. As far as the leaders go, a lighter leader will help with finnicky bream, while a thicker leader will help with the flattys as they tend to saw through a thin leader relatively quickly.
I have taken both species on similar baits and SP's, although flattys will take a larger bait/SP a lot more readily than bream. They also tend to favour the more colourful SP's at times.

Flathead eat everything that passes by them. I have caught them on heaps of different sp's and normally they are a bycatch when bream fishing.
8lb leader would be about as much as I would go as any higher will probably spook the bream.
If the area you fish holds very big flathead then your best off with a different rod, more specifically a good graphite composite stick so you can put a fair amount of hurt onto the fish.
Are you after a specific list of combo's that will also handle your style of fishing because thats how I interpreted your post. If you do let us know how much you want to spend so we can all point you in the right direction and give you as many options as possible.

I was really just looking advice on the line, main and leader. I'll probably stick with the 6lb braid main, and alternate between different weights of leaders. I got some 6lb Frog Hair fluorocarbon in the city yesterday. It's quite expensive but feels quite flexible and hopefully should be great on the bream.
One other thing with the flathead, when using SPs and jig head, is it necessary to use a sinker at all?

Flattys seem to like a bait which is kicking along the bottom stirring up a lot of sand and mud. If your jig is too small to get down there due to current or depth, then just up-size your jig. No need to add sinkers, as they more often than not will kill the action of the lure.:)

i bought a pack of cheap soft plastics the other day (no limits 105 piece set) and was wondering if i shud try them out or is it just a waste of time. would it help to dip them in tuna oil for a few hours and what would be the best colour for bream or flathed. the not big there around 35 mm each. i dont think ill catch fish withthtem so ill sell em to my mate (unless told otherwise)

Post up some pics of the lures. You never know what you have got. You might have some awsome lures.

It is anything like the tub of baits that you get from KMart, then don't be suprised with what you can catch on them! I had one when I first started with SP, and it accounted for a few flattys and bream. I even used some of the stick baits on Sambo's a couple of years ago for good results.
Some of those stick baits were made by Ecogear, and were very similar to their current minnow range!

Thats exactly why I wanted to see some pics in case it was one of "those" tubs.
Mate those lures will land heaps of flatties. In clear water just try and use the more natural colours.
