Hey all,
Quick report from offshore yesterday.
Very poor water off Sydney at present.

The water temps were:

13.1 at tunks.

14.5 at balmoral (v.clear sterile water and no baitfish anywhere).

16.1 at the heads.

17.6 at the 12 mile (some bottom fish in around 100m of water inc Snapper and Pinkies, but we found no kings - only gave it an hour of jigging and pillie fishing)

17.8-18.3 around browns and out to 12 miles south east of browns.

Basically we rolled out from 12 to wide of browns - skirts and tremblers.
Found no decent temp breaks anywhere and no sighting of tuna for us, so headed back to browns.
Was hard to bottom bash browns as 4kts of current running E-W and 5knts wind blowing W-E. tried with the new electric reel (daiwa tanacom bull) but to no avail
Was even hard to maintain a good cube trail in those conditions with the tuna having to travel further to get to the baits.
Heard of a fish dropped on the troll by one boat and another saw a freejumper but didnt hear anyone talking fish up.
Unlike previous weeks trips we saw no sauries, no slimies, no bird action other than in our cube trail, no sharks even though we had tuna berley and baits, no seals as have been around, no dolphins and no whales.
Guess then its no suprise we didnt find any Albacore or jellybeans (or even massive southern bluefin) like have been seen during the last few days.
Felt like we were in a desert of water.
Cubed till just after dark (14kg of pillies all up) then headed in.
No wonder the cod are living well at browns - 20 boats cubing all day every day - they're getting the free feed of a lifetime!
Anyway 16hrs on the water and no fin to show for it.
Was gonna go again today but after that effort and with the SST charts not exactly showing any good water closing in on Sydney there was no way.
hope this saves someone a lot of fuel and pillies..

Same story from my mates that were out there yesterday in my boat, also other today did not good, something tells me they could in closer?
I know that yesterday, a boat covered the whole distance to Heatons trolling and cubing for nothing but Blue Sharks and Squid at night.
Predator Charters off Kiama lost a big fish on sunday after 4hrs on 37kg, so they still on their way up. Patience everyone. August is the month it goes off usually.

Yeah there is good water up north off port stephens too, but we just have this 17-18 degree eddy off us at present with no good temp breaks.
Reckon there is nothin in close the water is so shocking... and there is no bait...
In a couple of weeks or so we might start to see some better fish....
Hopin so.

Im afraid the water is just crapola out there, everywhere off Sydney and the Central Coast Jase, i would concentrate my efforts on the Kings on the offshore reefs and the Snapper too, they should be on the chew, i have some marks if you need? All the best for when you go.

Steff, I was out on Sunday with a bunch of blokes and managed 3 'Fin and one huge chicken! The Chicken went 18KG back at home after being bled, and the bigger 'Fin would have been in the 22KG range. A bunch of other boats I knew only managed a few sub 10KG models. All of ours came in AFTER change of tide, at between 3 and 4. Tide change was at 2.

G'Day lads.

Was out around Browns yesterday with me mates Jacko and Carrie.
Heard most reports that people got 0. We tried to avoid the crowds hovering over Browns, who wants to compete with the crowds when the schools come through anyway???
We kept at it hoping that our luck would change, although water temp was not ideal 17.5. At 2pm when most of the trailer boats dissappeared???our luck changed. 5 yellow fin in an hour. Although not big fish, all around 15kg on the old shimano scales, they covered our fuel and bait and made for a great day.
Seems to me alot of people dont want to sit it out and be patient whilst chasing these fish or they give up on their trail too quick and keep moving back over Browns.
We drifted 21km's yesterday from about 9:30am to 5:15pm but we got fish.

Hey Netic, which site do you get the water temps from?

Dont you want me to SMS them to you Jase?
Oz gets those charts from Seasurface.Com, its a paid subscription.
I know some boats got fish, but not in the usual amount that should be there.
My mate Changa lost a 100kg+ Bluefin at the boat yesterday after 5hrs nearly on 15kg!! Would have been a record for Aus waters.
76kg Broadbill taken late last night.
Some more Fin are off Kiama, Albies sighted at Browns today.
And some serious news regarding those Big Eye hey!!!!!!!

Sorry you had no luck....

Heres a picture of me mate Carrie with his first caught yellow fin. The other picture is him fighting a 2nd much larger fish that he lost due to not him not laying the line back on the reel evenly!:rolling laughter:
Couldnt wind anymore line on and fish was still 15m under the boat!:ranting2:

But over all a cracker of a day!:beerchug: :beerchug:

Top work Choc, nice pics. Pity about the bigger one.....
Were you at Browns with the mob or did you manage to find a temp break?

choc74
29-07-07, 03:46 PM
James

Carrie has the bug already....came for a cple of runs with Bruce and I earlier in the year up at Port Stephens which started him off. Last week caught that YFT which is his largest fish to date, prior to that it was a 2kg snapper so big improvement. Dont get too upset though, will fit you on again provided you do away with the fags for the day:rolling laughter:

Imnotafish,
Didnt find a break, I subscribe to seasurface.com.au and from charts realised there were no breaks close enough for us to reach. Heaps of boats at Browns so we trolled North about 6-8 km's before we started our drift. Wanted to stay away from the crowds. By about 2pm most had called it a day. Between 2 -3pm we caught 4 of the 5 fish.:red party:
My theory is if I am by myself the fish only have one trail to swim up. Fishing riht on top of Browns with 20 other boats????? well you just hope to fluke it.

Nice work Choc and Crew,
James on Black Pete today had quadriple hook up on Bluefin wide of Browns, lost two but got the other 2 @ 55kg's. Few other fin boated too, but mostly singles here and there.
Oh i want to get out!

Kamil spoke to James the other day, he said he's never seen line melt off the spool so fast as those bluefin........

Choc yeah heres hopin those breaks are getting closer this week, at the moment they're still miles off..
We could see more & bigger fish then.

Hey Netic at least you got out there.....I'v been fishing many times the last 2 months for literally nothin, sharks and tiddlers dont count but getting out and giving it a go is half the fun but for you guys going offshore it would be a pain in the butt spending all that money on fuer and bait for zip.

Oh well, warmer weather is coming so it will improve soon (I hope).

Oz you're so right! I'm just hangin for the summer currents to push down now! I'm nearly over the YFT, or should i say lack there of! Bring on the December Stripes!

Jase, yeah i understand going out there is tops too, so relaxing at times and satisfying. But as you said when you put in the time, effort and money, it gets frustrating! Im sure the fish will appear sooner or later! The winds can't even make up their minds! One day southerly the next Northerly?? Whats the go there!
Bring on the Jews and Marlin!

Well guys I am saving it all up till the end of August and then going down to Bermagui for one last try for a 100 kg + Yellowfin.
If I hook up I know I won't be able to land it but will hand the rod to a younger fitter guy to land it for me.

hey guys just got back.
Found the water and breaks that netic put up yesterday.
Some sweet water but bit choppy and windy all morning, calmed down in the arvo and by dusk was pretty flat out there.
unbelievably there was no one around out there today, tho i guess we were north of browns 4 most of the day.
Trolled from the shelf off broken bay down almost as far as browns (5miles north) for zeros
The water in the warmer stuff was blue as but everything around is green water.
We began cubing but drifting just kept sending us out of that thin blue line and into the dead green stuff.
Put some livies down for a drift throught the blue while still cubing and......

FINALLY

ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

On to the fish for a few minutes - felt decent size, but never saw it - my wind on (a bought one) snapped through at the dacron where my braid was attached (with a cats paw)
got my double back all in tact but no wind on attached and no fish

pretty ****ty......

welcome to game fishing.
guess happy at least to get a run after some average days out lately, but no fish is no fish.
Still there r some out there in that good water.
if the break was wider and we could get a better trail going through it i reckon there would have been more fish.
it will be worth going out again in the next few days if this lick of warm water widens
