As the is a Bluewater forum, the least that can be reported is that there is bluewater out there & not much else it seems.
Ankles and I were deckies for JJSydney in his 5.8m Haines Centre Cab yesterday, launching at ATB at 0600. First stop Barrenjoey for squid, of which there was only the one co-operative animal. Thence to West Head where the yakkas & slimeys were a little more helpful although the basted Mado were very unwelcome. Grrrr.
Out to the first of the traps & I was very happy that we were in the Haines & not the Steji - a tad lumpy for Gunboat.
Nothing, & it wasn't until about the third set of traps that Ankles boated a dollie about 18" on a pillie bait. Current was very strong to the south often sinking the first three of a four float trap and a bugger to fish when the wind was from the south! We even put the drogue out but the current won!
We couldn't find two private FADS for which I had marks as I reckon their bouys were well underwater.
Anyhow, we did the line of traps to the south then headed up to the goverment FAD. We didn't get even a siting of a fish there & none of the other boats looked as though they caught anything either.
Back to the trap where we earlier had success and with some persistant working of lures, livies and bait, another dollie was boated, to Ankles again. We only saw two free jumping dollies and the only evidance from the sounder was that they were holding about 25m down. Hard work to reach in that current.
We stopped off at the 'Joey on the way back in to use up the livies at a spot where Jon boated many kingys the day before. True to the day's form, the only hook-up was on a trap rope. Very pleased to report that all my knots held as I pumped & wound Jon's boat backwards to the trap!
I should also add that the solitary bite I had all day was about a minute after I put the 7000 in the rod holder to make a 'phone call. We were slowly motoring back up to the FAD and it was the only time all day that the reel was in gear. Grrrrrr.....
Thanks to Jon & to Ankles for the day out, next time I hope these fantastic sports fish are a bit more fired up!
Cheers, Darryl
