you can always turn the 55 down, you cant turn up the 45 when you really need it in a stronger current, also whats the price difference? You can also stick the leccy up the front even if it is a rear mount as they steer a bit better that way.

do you think it be good for around headlands and that as a back up motor, i think the differents is about 50 bucks so i think i go with the 55

That will be more than ample, just remember to keep the batteries charged, and to have them seperate from the one you use for your engine and electronics, try to get deep cycle ones if you can designed for the job, and watch the costs spiral out of control!!!!
I had a minn kota 55 on the 465 ally craft I used to have and it was fine so for your dory it should fly along

is javis marine electric motor any good, anyone got one
Quinie, one thing that I have learnt over the years is that you get what you pay for. If an item is much much cheaper than others there is a reason for it.
I recently bought a Jarvis packaged marine compass that looked good and was well priced. Unfortunately it pointed the wrong way, was slow to respond to changes in direction and if you tipped the unit at an angle the card did not come back to a level position for some minutes. Pure garbage! I returned it to the shop where I know the owner who then told me that Jarvis imports a wide range of gear, (China I think) and that some of it is good and some is rubbish.
I would be loath to buy something as sophisticated as an electric motor without some good reports as to its reliability and corrosion resitance over a reasonable period of time. There have been quite a few Mini Kota's on E Bay and the Trading Post that would probably be a much better bet for you. (that's where I intend to go to get an electric for my tinnie)

I have to back Haji up there Quinnie.....a mate up the coast purchased another brand of electric(not sure of the brand) a few years ago and returned it twice within the first few months he owned it, he then payed the extra for a Minn Kota and still has it today........don't go cheap on some things mate..Won't take you long to make the extra $$$$ needed.
A great alternative that will save you a few $$$ is a paddle:rolling laughter: :rolling laughter:

i got it, it was so hard to said no, i had alot of good feedback on the motor so, now it is on my boat,
i took it down the georges river for a run, it was good, did about 3 km is about 30 mins, it was good,
and then wen i got it home i run it in a bucket for about 1 hour and the batteries did't go flat, so i packed it up, i did't want to watch it go flat, it would have been forever, lol
anyway there good,
if anyone like them k-mart have got them for $300 this week, and $270 for 44lb,
