View Full Version : Fuel - what type
Hi,
I thought i would start this to find out whats best and what to avoid.
I just use standard unleaded from the 7/11 - should i be using a BP, Shell etc type of fuel or doesn't it matter?

Fuel's all basically the sameexcept Dont Use That Cr*p called Ethonol or E10
It's made from sugar cane
Saw a thing on one of the current affairs shows some 12 months back how the servo's were selling it under unleaded fuel now laws dont permit them to do so & they have to market it as ethonol.
Was a pissoff for me cause I hadn't used my little boat for some 6 months & as a rule I have 2 fuel tanks on any boat I own anyway I topped up both tank one was empty & went out for a fish.
Could prime up fuel from one of the tanks the one which was not empty so swithed over to the other primed it no probs.
When I got home I started looking to see where the prob was & found the fuel line coming from the tank to the waterseperator / filter was blocked.
Being a underfloor tank I used a electric pump to empty the tank of fuel removed the hose & I kid you not found a blockage about 40 cm's long @ the base of where the hose sat flat on the floor of the boat.
The fuel had crystalised into a silicon type form I call it crytalise cause thats what sugar cane does but there's another term for it.
Ethonol can & will damage rubber seals on your motor & in my case it gunked up the fuel line another reason why you should always run your carbies dry of fuel on those toy 2 strokes.
Over time fuel will evapourate leaving the 2stroke oil to gunk up in the carbsblock reed valves etc.
Not a prob if you've got 4 bangers as there's no 2 strokein the mix

Hey DC (Dog catcher) all fuel gums up over time if left long enough wether it be pre-mix or straight....good idea if storing for a long time is to use a fuel stabiliser like 'Stabil' helps avoid the gumming problem. Check this thread we have kind-of covered this topic and I'm sure you would have something to add.

storms why go to the trouble of using an additive when the prob can be avoided by just runing your motor dry ???
If you have one of those crappy oil injected motors you wont harm it by shuting of the oil cause you're running motor under 1000 revs it's when you rev out themotor you really need the 2 stroke lubrication
