Hi Guys (PS this has been posts elsewhere)
I have preliminary approval from the boss to move forward with upgrading my trusty 150hp Yammie.
I have loved this engine, quite for a 2stroke and exceptional on the troll at low rpm.
I have been looking around and pricing from some of the site sposnors and others and am at two opts, looking for some thought and wondering if anyone has one of these 2 motors ona boat so I could see how they run.
I have a heavy 5.8m haines Center Cab boat.
Opt 1: Suzuki 140hp 4 Stoke, call it 16k on the boat with a SS prop.
Opt 2: HPDI VMAX Yammie, call it 14,500 on the boat ss prop,
They both read as great engines, little concerned about dropping HP, and out of the hole performance on the 4, we have a little guy 2 at the moment but in the next 5-7yrs I imagine he will want to ski/play behind the boat as a skip bait(I did not really say that)
I have been very happy with the Yammi engine I have and am tempted to stay with a brand, but have read so much about the 4strokes and eco stuff, looking for so feed back, I believe the HPDI's r almost as good as the 4's on consumption and smoke.
Anyone have one I can look at or thought between the 2.
To move to 150hp 4 in suzuki it goes up 5k, and the yammie about 3, 15K is the ceiling I am working with and very happy there is one so not going to try and edge it around ;)
Hoping for feed back
Regards
Jon
Jon, good luck with the hunt. It gets very confusing and messy when looking at new stuff!
I can't offer any info on those motors as I havn't had experience with either. But there is a plethora of engines out there. Did you look at other brands as well?

It is very confusing and although i have not had the two mentioned, i have a 115 optimax merc and a 80 4stroke yamaha. The yamie is quieter, but the bigger merc uses around the same amount of fuel on a bigger boat than the yammie on a smaller boat. The expensive oil that the HPDI enjines use can be a bit prohibitive. All the same both are far better than the old 2 strokes, I saved the extra money spent on the merc on fuel savings in the first 12 to.18 months.
The old force 125 would use between $70 to $90 a day, the optimax went down to $25 to $40 aday, for me it was a massive saving.
Have you looked at the E-Tec or Verado's?

Hi Guys
Have looked at the Etec and Verados both excellent motors but into 20k fitted,
Have a price of 17k for the yammie 4stroke and think I will settle on that anyone had happy news re this motor.
Jon
Are you getting the 150 Yammy 4 stroke? If so i may have some news for you regarding this motor.

I too have been looking at the " very lightweight suzuki 140" and 150 etech for the back of allison
Ive heard of at least one " non johnson" dealer purchasing an e-tech for his father as in his opinion they`re the very best of todays technology. And with those service intervals, the loss of service cost savings go out the window

Hi Guys
I have opt'ed for the F150 4stroke Yammie, on the boat took it up to Port and put 15hrs on it over the week end. In for the 1st service tomorrow.
Stoked with it, very good out of the hole, not quite the same but absolutly acceptable, super quiet up to 2000rpm then reasonable.
At troll like Dan said not idea it's on. no smoke, idels @ 600rpm and the navman fuel guage read 1.2l per hr.
Took it to the Car park 26mile SE of Port, trolled around all day and back est covered by the chart potter around 90miles, came home is aweful head wind. Motor was on and running for a good 10hrs, went oout @ 30m/hr and home @ 15-20m/hr and still had 1/4 tank of gas, unbelievable would have used the 2 fuel cans and been worried with the 2stroker.
WOT in the bay did 44m/hr.
Happy chappy here.
Jon
Congrats on the new motor Jon. Hope it serves you well!:D
Good stuff mate, I'm looking at a 03 model 200hp honda at the moment. What did you get for your motor as trade in??

Hi Bashir
Mine was a 95 Yammie 2stroke, over 1k hrs onn it, ss prop and got 4k, was fair but not generous.

Yeh I'm not expecting much more than 8k for my motor so it will be interesting to see what he reckons. The 4 stroke will open up a whole new world now for you, more time on the water with bigger range = more fish!!!

Id research that 3yr old 2nd hand honda before you bought her. Why woul;d someone off load a perfectly good donk. And don`t believe "hour meters" there very easy to fiddle with. All you have to do is buy a new hr meter. Leave it conected to a battery for a week or two then fit it it your boat. Its now only reading 300 hrs! Scary.
Didn`t rob have problems with his 2nd hand 100hp yammie 4s after he purchased it? Spending the extra $$ on a new donk, even if your not planning to sell in the near future always adds to the boats value which ends up in you pocket anyway in the end

Dan I have the same opinion, however it is going for half of what they are new so I can't ignore it completely. It was used on a twin rig 7.5m cat for 12 months by the NSW maritime then they upgraded to the 225's apparently - everyone buys second hand cars without an issue, there is no reason why you can't buy a good 2nd hand outboard, just gotta play it safe. Having said that, I'm actually saving for a brand new motor, but when I saw this, it was hard to ignore.

Thats a good enough reason for me. Genuine ex gov`t I have to admit id buy it too. My comment was more along the lines of some backyarder selling it for some b@llsh@t reason.
