View Full Version : Shark help needed...
Gday everyone, basically I'm pretty keen to catch a shark, be it a mako, hammerhead or whaler and I'm just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on where to start...
Most likely I will be fishing the broken bay area and any info regarding rigs, baits, where I'm most likely to encounter one or any other helpful hints would be much appreciated...
Thanks...
Tony.
Maybe DAN aka HOTTUNA will see this thread.
He know all there is to know about catching and targeting noah's.
Cheers
Lee
This time of year lots of small to medium sharks are around out of b/bay. Blues,Makos & H/heads mainly, try around Esmarelda & burley with a blockpilchard/tuna oil mix in a 20lt bucket with some salt water & cup it over at regular intervals(burley pots not recommended from small boats) when the fins start circling your boat drop a livey in its face, let it swim off a bit & hit it & hang on!
I did say lots of small ones, thats not saying there are no big fellas so be carefull what you wish for if your boat aint real big!
Greg.
Hi mate,
What sort of size boat are you fishing from?
also depending on what sort of size shark you are after too..
When we fish for sharks we are out a bit wider around broken bay wide and sometimes on the shelf
4 baits are the norm to set out 2 on the surface one deep and one mid surface
usually a livey, and some big baits
dont be afraid to run bigg bigg baits
nice striped tuna or bonnie, is a great bait
we run smaller baits on 400-600 pd wire with 9/0 hooks
bigger baits 1000 to 1200 pound wire with bigger hooks. pending on bait
size.
we chum with pilchards, chicken mince etc etc etc
you need a nice big slick happening
again it all depends what size you are after.
we fish out of a 5.5m boat. so its all possible.
just to show heres a photo of a 300kg+ tiger taken by a 5.5m boat in the lake mac gamefishing comp that was recently on

Tony,
did you have a go yet - if you did how'd ya go ?
There are alot of Sharks in the Hawkesbury and Sydney Harbour.
In the Hawkesbury, try Croppy Point on the high tide, most big baits will get you one. I got two, one metre Hammerheads on the weekend here. Other places have them too like between Flint and Steel and Hungry Beach. I have been getting a few in the past few weeks. One night we got 7 baby hammers in the space of 2hrs.
Alternatively, Sydney Harbour is full of them also, my mate last week hooked a 50kg Bull Shark around Chiswick, and lost one estimated at 100kg.
They are there. All the best
Kamil

Have you tried whale oil with your berley?
A tiny bit will bring sharks in from miles away
we have a secret stash of it out at the Windsor shop. Its 30 years old but just as good as the day they got it off the whale!!!
Hey guys sorry for not replying earlier...
I've been over in WA on holidays and haven't had internet access...
DJMAC- usually fish out of a 4.3m tinny, hence my desire to not tangle with too large a bitey just yet...
I'd rather start small and work my way up... :)
Thanks for all your info guys, hopefully I can get out this weekend and do battle with a toothy critter, I'll let you know the result if I do manage to get out...
Sounds interesting sydfish, any suggestions as to where I may be able to obtain some of this oil?

Weve got the oil at the windsor shop. 7.50 a tub, its all old stuff from when the whaling was legal, still works just fine. Also the best thing for stopping squeaks and rust on the boat.

Do you guys do mail order?
Going to windsor is like going interstate for me... :)
