Yeah I have a mate that lives in Pekin Baru , Indonesia and he frequents Borneo as his litlle holiday spot. The reef fishishing is quite similar to ours and many of the same species occur. You will find sweet lip, red throat bass, and Kingies.
Some years ago I made several (business) visits to both Kuching and Bintulu in Sarawak (Borneo) and while I was there looked around to see if I could score a fishing trip with some expats. No luck, I couldn't even find any locals who were interested in taking me out.
In my past experience fishing many places in the world I always found that the indigenous locals are often the most knowledgable (and cheapest) source of fishing trips but with few notable exceptions their gear is lousy. Try a sailfish in Vanuatu fishing out of an outboard powered outrigger canoe with some lovely local village people but only 50 m of line on an antiquated rod and reel. Predictably the sail lasted all of 60 seconds! (on my return to Aus I sent the village a heap of spare fishing gear that we all collect over time, hooks, line, lures, swivels,Alvey reel etc and have since received a letter saying that they are making good use of it)
So the point is this , if you are going into territory without having made prior arrangements for a charter and proper gear make sure that you take your own gear with you.:luck:

that was a really top post there haji it says a lot about you
careing and sharing with less fortunate people
your secret is out now ya big softy  :cool-smiley:
Yeah "Fishinf" but I am planning on going back there and have been invited to go out with them again so maybe not so soft? Just cunning!
No really mate the people over there are just brilliant, they have few possessions live simply and enjoy life, not an avaricious bone in their body.
By contrast I worked in Bougainville, New Guinea in 1969/70 and got friendly with the local villagers in Loloho to the point that they helped to teach my son and daughter to swim (hanging onto the outriggers of their canoes).
Those villagers had it all. The men would go out every afternoon in their canoes and using a single hook with a feather tied to it and a bamboo pole they would catch tuna and other pelagics as they came into the bay every afternoon, regular as clockwork! Their river provided clean drinking water that flowed all day every day and the woman grew root crops and bananas.
Unfortunately construction of the Bougainville copper mine (which I took part in) polluted the river to the point that the water was undrinkable and there was a large brown plume running into the bay. Then some of the American construction people started paying the locals to collect live shells and painted crayfish.
One of the construction wallas did some diving with the locals and on finding that most of the crayfish escaped by crawling into coral caves showed the younger locals how to break the caves open using a crowbar.
By the time that I left the bottom of the bay was strewn with broken coral, the local elders were bemoaning their younger members buying tinnies with the money they got for their shells and crays and refusing to take part in village activities.
In other words, in less than two years the place was stuffed! But hey, that's progress right?
I hope that the Vanuatu villagers never receive the same type of "benefit" from our advanced culture, As I see it their life is pretty damm good just as it is!

hello all from the sandy shores of sabah.
unfortunately the fishing so far has been unsuccessful but should improve. after ariving at 1am on friday morning still very drunk from the plane trip (after about the 20th beer on the first flight they cut me off) but the second flight they didnt know that, i decided to crash for the night. first thing in the morning was to hit up the buffet breakfast then straight out to the point for a fish after climbing along the rocks for about 45 minutes i finally found a good looking spot, after about 5 minutes of throwing a lure around the rocks i got snagged and then the snag started heading out to sea at a million miles an hour and i could not hold on to it on my 15 lbs set up an it got away:banghead: :ranting2: . the next 30 minutes saw this happen twise more and a few more strikes but no luck and no idea wat it was. then the tide started coming up and i was going loose my path back so i decided to head back to the hotel... did i menton it hadnt stopped raining since we arived.
from here things just got worse later the that day i decided to walk 7 km up the beach to the enterance to a estury in hope of better luck, once i found a good spot next to some mangroves i took my rod out of the rod tube only to find out that the piece of **** now had 3 broken eyes (its my mates really old rod but it was the only rod i could get hold of that would fit in the tube) so there was no way i could do any fishing so i walked 7more kms back to the hotel. i am now covered in sand fly bites i have a broken rod and the chance of me picking up any chicks is looking low (there is 3 good lookers hear and they r with boyfriends).
but the good news is i am organising to head out deep sea fishing on tuesday or wednesday and tomorrow night i am going night fishing in the estury for 2 hour so hopefully i will have better news.
anyways im off happy hour is about to start at the "night club" so i better get in there:hellyeah: :beerchug: :alcho meter: :red party: . laters.
oliver
better luck tomorrow mate!
i hope you get onto something big!

Well the 1st thing you need to do is get your nose pieced then insert a bone through the hole.
Got to fit in with the locals you know :rolling laughter:

gday all,
back in sydney now and the fishing did improved since my last report with plenty of fish but no photos (my camera decided to **** up and wont work and i couldnt find and cheap cameras over there):
tuesday night: i organised to go night fishing that the activity centre here at the resort sets up every couple of nights. unfortunaty they didnt say anything about it being for 12 year olds and i found out we were fishing in an over sized gold fish pond using bamboo poles with a bit of string tied to them. it might not have been wat i expected but it was good for a laugh as the first fish i caught was the smallest fish i have ever seem landed mesuring in under 2cm:rolling laughter: :rolling laughter: :rolling laughter: .
wednesday: i decided to do a quick and dodgy fix job on the broken eyes on my rod to last me till i get back to sydney and head for the estury again but this time i found a much closer spot just up the road from the resort. on my first attempt i got there and found the tide was way to low for anyland based fishing plus the water was close to boiling point so i dout there was anything there so i went back to the pool for a few hours. i returned later that arvo to find a nice high tide and cooler water so i found my self i nice spot next to some mangroves and started throwing a few lures round with no luck for 20 minutes i decided to try a different spot which was a good idea on my 3rd cast i hooked on to a nice GT around the 45cm mark which had line screaming off my reel this was followed by another 2 around the same size and 2 nice size estury cod:hellyeah: .
thursday i headed into town to try and charter a boat after finding out that through the hotel i was going to cost me $2500 us. when i was close to giving up as the best i had found was still around $1000 us i headed in to the fishing shop to have a look around for some cheap tackle, i got talking to the guy and he said his friend could take me out for 250rm (around $90 aus) so i booked in a trip with his friend for friday.
friday: our driver from the hotel had the day off so he decided to come out with me and brang me a 3 kg spin set to use for the lighter stuff (which ended up being every thing). we arived at the boat at around 7am and headed out. on the way out this island off to the side was looking very familiar and it turned out be the island out of the first surviver and its about 1km out from KK the capital of sabah. after motoring out for about an hour we finally came to these bamboo poles sticking out of the water and we tided up to one. with schools of bait fish smashing the surface it was looking good so we put on the bait jigs and started getting bait, i was very suprised that my first cast brought up 2 small queen fish around 10cm and a 15cm bonito as well as these the schools consisted on yakkas and long tail tuna all around 10-15cm. after collecting some bait i dropped some fresh tuna down under the boat which got hammered but a 50cm barracuda which where slamming everybait that got put in the water unless u managed to get ur bait down past them to the bottom which brought up some small cod and a couple of emperor and a handful of other small reef species which i couldnt name.
unfortunately the fishing on that side of the island is pretty average un less u can get to the outter reefs because the locals do a lot of dinomite fishing and there for the fish stocks arent great.
sounds like oyu had a great time.
that part about the fishing class thing is gold lol!
WENT SQUIDING FROM THE YOWIE BAY WHARF LAST NIGHT. DID NOT CATCH ANY SQUID BUT DID GET A SMALL CUTTLEFISH (SEE PICS) WHICH WAS PROMPTLY DECORATED WITH A PAIR OF HOOKS AND SENT OUT TO WELCOME ANY JEWIES THAT MIGHT BE VISITING THE AREA.
NO LUCK, SO CAME ON HOME AT AROUND 10PM.
THOUGHT THAT SOME OF OUR YOUNGER OR "NEW TO FISHING" MEMBERS MIGHT LIKE TO SEE WHAT A CUTTLEFISH LOOKS LIKE. THIS ONE DID NOT SEEM TO HAVE THE TWO LONG TENTACLES THAT BIGGER ONES HAVE (AT LEAST AS LONG AS THEIR BODY AND USED TO GRAB THEIR PREY)
THE BIG EYES ARE A FEATURE OF CUTTLEFISH WHICH ARE REPUTED TO GO VERY DEEP WHERE THEY NO DOUBT NEED THOSE BIG EYES TO SEE IN THE POOR LIGHT.
AS I LOOK AT THE EYES I CAN'T GET A PICTURE OF MY MOTHER IN LAW OUT OF MY MIND. I DON'T KNOW WHETHER IT IS THE MOURNFULL LOOK OR THE TENTACLES! (hope she doesn't read this or I am in trouble)
