Yep.

I kept my first for the table - a small black of about 60 kilos - took about 6 hours to dress out properly and apart from that is not something I would do again. BTW none of it was wasted.

It tastes OK but a bream or flathead is far better eating. The small ones are young fish and have not had time to build up a high mercury content like a lot of the larger ones sold in the fish market. Mercury testing is not carried out on every fish in Australia, however marlin from the markets tastes 'metallic" and an educated guess would be that it is the mercury content in them.

I have tasted marlin before. A very nice tasting fish if prepared and cooked correctly.

I like the taste and it really is the chicken of the sea. it cooks very quickly so be very careful not to over cook it.

Cheers

I've had it in the past at a restaurant but these days will not eat it out of principle.

It was a steak (i.e. cut across the grain, not along the grain like a fillet) and was actually pretty good. I don't know if you've had swordfish before but it was a bit like that.

I never eatin it in the past cause ive never heard any one really rate it as a good eating fish.

Nowdays i wont eat it on principal either. Actually dont eat much commercial seafood at all any more if a can help it.

I've eaten it before, and liked it.
Now I wont kill one, or eat one on Principal. They are now too special to me to catch just once.

Oh dear, not another thread going the "Big Flatty" way. :?

I must admit I saw a marlin frame and head at the Little Beach cleaning tables about a year ago and that did it for me. They are just far too majestic for me to consider them as table fare.

Isn't it strange how we don't look at cows and sheep as cute and cuddly or bold and majestic and avoid eating them at all costs. I suppose it would sound pretty weird to ring a mate and ask him if he wanted to come around for a few beers and to chuck a marlin steak on the barby.

you never know... we manage the worlds fisheries properly and one day we may indeed be able to do just that...

(yes i am an optimist  )

That'd be great lure. We can only hope that one day commonsense will prevail.

The difference is that cows are not hunted out of the wild. They are farmed for the specific purpose of becoming food.

I always thought that was the unwritten law of marlin fishing. First is always kept, then after that its up to the angler what they wish to do with them. Sometimes a fish wears itself out and has fought so hard that they are dead once they come to the boat so they would need to be kept and not wasted.

The yanks when hunting have some strange unwritten laws, like when deer hunting you must drink the blood of your first kill and admire the animal for what it is.

i think most people do admire marlin and if its kept it should be respected for the fight the both angler and fish put up.

Cheers

Good luck matey - after you've dressed out one of those b@#tards you'll change your mind. Not only do you have to gut and clean em you've got to cut them up into meal size chunks and skin them, cut out their air cells and tendons and the buggers have real stupid like scales that get everwhere. Give me a bream anyday! - Marlin are great fun to catch though!

It used to be cool to knock a fish on the head back in the days.
Get you picture with a big fish, bragging rights for a good capture to mates and abit of an ego boost.

Most people I know/Fish with are pretty much over that aspect of it.

If we want a feed we'll chase some dolly's. Piss easy to catch a 1/100th of the preparation invovled.

Choosing to knock one on the head for the sake of it, or using the "it was my first marlin" excuse doesnt sit well with me.

Mr Antenna,
All the best on the weekend, I hope you nail one. Make sure you have a pretty large esky, and lots and lots of Ice. Bleed the fish and keep it out of the sun. Dress it as soon as possible. Though im sure your allready going to do all this if your planning on eating it.
