FISHED OUT OF ONE OF THESE ON THE TWEED ABOUTA YEAR AGO< WAS A HIRE BOAT AND HAD A 9HP ON IT SO WAS A SLUG, BUT IT GOT ME TO THE FISH, ALBIET SLOWLY, AND I THOUGHT WITH A BIT MORE HP IT WOULD BE AN OK BOAT. VERY STABLE BUT SO IS A TENDER IN SHETLERED WATERS. HOPE THIS HELPS, ASK FOR A WATER TEST ON A CHOPPY DAY IN BOTANY BAY OR THE HARBOUR AND THEN MAKE A CALL. IF HES CONFIDENT THEN IT SHOULDNT BE A PROBLEM

you have to stand in the boat and bounce around a bit and look for spungey bits
and the transom tilt the motor up fully and shake the leg
the back should be solid
i hope this helps
p.s. any probs just put up a post we will all help
Hi
Pongrass boats date back to the 70's when the company's chief designer Frank Bailey designed a range of well priced boats that were very popular for estuary and bay use.
They generally had a shallow deadrise (angle of the bottom at the transom) which made them very stable and top (inside) fishing boats. From memory deadrise ranged from approx 10 degrees for their Surfmaster model (14 Ft 6") to 12 degrees for the 17Ft Waverider model (Bigger version of the boat that you are looking at)
Jeff Webster in his book "Second Hand Boat Workshop" made the following observations re Pongrass boats.
"Shop carefully though because the Pongrass boats are prone to having rot in the transom and floor, and getting stuck with a bad one will really ruin your day"
If it was me I would give any boat that has been hand painted a miss, particularly one as old as the one that you are looking at. Far better to keep looking and find a boat that has a faded (but sound) gel coat and a little younger. Also, if you want to go outside try to get a hull that has a deeper deadrise which will make it safer for limited offshore use.
The Seafarer V-Sea, Savage Escort and Haines Hunter fibreglass boats are a top pic for smaller seaworthy boats that you can pick up for a reasonable price, I have found country editions of the Trading Post to be a good source for well priced boats from private sellers.
Finally, make sure that you do what a previous post advised, that is,with the motor in the up position get hold of the skeg and firmly push the motor up and down, the transom should not flex in and out. If it does, give it a miss! As to the floor, jumping up and down on it should reveal any weakness or "sponginess", again, if it shows any sign of springing either give it a miss or factor in the cost of replacing the floor as part of the deal.
Good Luck!

Quinnie, boats on e-bay and some other items only get serious bidders in the last few minutes....have a look at the price climb dramatically when the bidding is almost over....
Mick, I got the trading post the other day, a few good deals in there mate, I will try catch up with you this weekend and lend a hand.
Maybe Kamil or others with a bit of know how and spare time could give Mick a hand with this or recommend any good boat yards worth checking out?

Well that Merc on the back would make a good anchor a bit dear @ $4,500 though :rolling laughter:
Mate with any glass boats you look @ esp as old as that one is hop inside it jump & down on the floor & see how much it moves this will give you some indication if the floor is rotting away.
Another place to look is the transom cause when they fit motors they drill through the transom & never seal the bloody holes which allows water to get into the ply & rot it away

You can do a lot better than that for $4,500. the guys are right the most common fault for a boat of that age will be the floor and transom rotting.
That motor is also a bit too old.
Keep looking something better is sure to turn up. You have to be the first to view the boat when it is advertised because the good ones go straight away.

Couldn't agree more, you have to work out first what you want the boat for, then work out your budget and then look at a heap of boats in the size, price range and condition...Trust me when i say it's more painful than searching for a car, but in the end worth it, it is far worse breaking down at sea than on the highway...good luck , take your time and enjoy:beerchug:

Mick, I would guess between 3 and 5g, depending on condition could go for more....Looks pretty good.
Might be worth you considering getting something a bit smaller, $4,000 goes a long way when looking at 12-14ft tinny with tiller steer engine, you could upgrade later to a bigger boat. Also a benefit if you have engine issues as its much cheaper to repair/replace a 15-30hp compared to a 50-100hp!
Jason
yeah true mate ..mate you still able to give us a hand on the weekend boat hunting :hellyeah:

Mick. Don't know if you would be interested or not.
I noticed you said you would rather have a faded one that you could do up yourself.
I have a Steber 475df that I want to get rid of.
http://www.fishnet.com.au/content/fishnet/images/gallery/b2cc69ac18d640169d98dd52798e91af.jpg
I haven't had it in the water or started it for over 12 months, bet she starts within a few turns though.
It has a 55hp evenrude ( which is slightly under powered ) but I used to take it 6 mile off Bermagui often.
She needs a damn good scrub and polish as I have let the spiders take over the last 12 months or so.
50 ltr fuel tank or will swap for normal 24 ltrs if you prefer.
Has 27meg radio, No seats ( but could work something out ) .
Boat and trailer still registered ( would have to check how much ) think the trailer due Oct and boat Dec.
Has large berley bucket and plenty of rod holders also small live tank ( would have to re plumb ).
There is a tilt mechanism needs to be fixed. and only has man tilt.
Won't cost you anything but time to come and have a look at it.
You can have it for $ 2500.
PS also have full spare motor, + spare leg + 2x carby ( re built ) and a heap of other spares for it, price negeotiable.
