Hello all,

I am looking at getting into some rock rishing around the northern beaches in Sydney. Currently my largest rod is 8ft (6-8kg), I am assuming that this will be a bit small. Any suggestions for a rod/reel combo around the $250-300 mark ?

Also if anyone is willing to point me in the directions of some easy to get to rocks to start out, it would be appreciated.

hey Simon welcome to the site mate, mate you should introduce yourself http://www.sydneyfishfinder.com.au/sffforum/forumdisplay.php?f=32 so we all know little about you and hope to help you out as much as we can.

Im using a 12ft Penn steel tip beach rod with a shimanoo 6500 btr... .10ft penn steel tip with okuma eb80 works fine for me

Hey Simon, Wayno has a top rod for sale would leave you enough change from your $300 to get a reel to start with.....My local tackle shop has some Silstar HF60 and 80's for sale for round $50-$60...I'v owned a HF80 for bout 6 yrs now it has been battered on the rocks but still runs as smooth as the day I bought it, drag is smooth, 5.2:1 gear ratio real nice inexpensive reel.

Get your self a snyder glass 7 wrap rod and Alvey 650 reel. It is the most deadly rock outfit you could own and is within your budget. If you want to talk more about your rockfishing PM me I have put in quite a few hours on the stones this winter.

Currently I am thinking of getting a the Okuma Epix 60 reel and 10-12ft rod to match but haven't decided yet. Will most likely go shopping on the weekend.

Have just ordered the Okuma Epix 60, now I am thinking of matching it with a Starlo Stix Shore Spin H.

Forget all the fancy stuff and learn to use an alvey! they are great and you can even get some models designed for high speed spinning. You cant kill em and you hardly have to wash em!:wiink:

Mate....I recently purchased a SSH and I love it....top rod-just be careful as they scratch very easily on the rocks....As Wayno said the Okuma arent too special mate.....you should be able to get a Shimano Stradic for round $200 at the moment or even a Shimano BTR4500 much better reel's than the Okuma....Especially off the rocks where gear tends to cop a hammering... Maybe too consider the Alvey option, BF knows his rock fishing and his advice is definately worth listening to.

Thanks for the tips, my brother has been using an Okuma reel and hasn't had any problems - although it is a smaller spinning model. I did want another Shimano reel but couldn't find too many for sale online that I wanted.

I might give them a call today and see if I can cancel the order or change it.

Have taken the advice and stopped the Okuma order. I am now contemplating the Shimano Sedona 6000FB as I already have the 1500FB and find it great. Have also decided to go into a shop and get it rather than buying online.

mate,i rock fish a fare bit i chase the big kings with a 12ft snyder glass 8 wrap very strong and robust rod i dont just use it for big kings i use it for salmon, tailor, jews and sharks they are a great beach rod aswell as a rock fishing rod, they are made out of fiberglass,we sell them for $200 to $229 a great reel to go with that is a diawa emcast they sell for around not sure of the price as i aint got one in our city store but definetly worth lookin at...okuma salina80 is a good real prob the only good one they do,i have used the 80 for deep water jigging to c how good they are and it definetly held up to wacking all day and catching several kings to 6kg..they sell for $189..any question please dont hesitate to phone us..

My outfit is now sorted. I ended up getting the SSH and paired it with a Sedona 6000, all I need now is to go fishing :) Hopefully I will get out later today.

I ended up getting 6kg Platypus Pre-Test, i've still got a spare spool so at some stage I will get some 8 or 10kg.

I originally went to BCF in Auburn to get a lantern so I can fish when it is dark and ended up getting the reel there. That shop is like a massive toy store, next time the credit card stays at home :hellyeah:
