can you put s/s rods holders in aluminium boats? ie the flush mount ones or do you get corrosion from dissimilar metals against each other?

Of course you can just use some teflon as a insulator 1 mm thick is heaps

Hi Hairy

Yes you can but it pays to have a rubber gasket between the holder and the alluminium. Rod holders like Reelax come with a combined gasker/cover but they are expensive. If you use one of the cheaper brands get some 3mm thick insertion rubber (reinforced with a layer of fabric) from Clark rubber and cut a gasket to suit. Also if the alluminium is only a light gauge and you are planning to have rods set with a heavy drag in the holders it may pay you to have a plywood backing plate to spread the load over a larger area. That will also keep the SS nuts from contact with the alluminium.

Cheers

Rubber is not a good idea reason being some of the rubber has a lead content in it which can be very corrosive to alluminiun.

Such rubber that I'm speaking of is what sent Quintrex broke 20 odd years ago they used it between the ribs & skin of their boats so the co folded & stessel purchased it.

No good asking a saleman @ Clark rubber if rubber has lead as those guys are clueless.

Relax do supply rubber seals but their rod holders are aimed @ glass boats.

Alloy boys generally have their rod holders welded in.

Another thing that is corrosive to alloy is certain types of silicons always read label to see if it contains lead.

Urathane such as Sikaflex is a far better option costs more but theres no lead & can also be used as a gasket

thanks fellas, may use a combo of sikaflex and ply

I agree with dog catcher, but i make ali windows and only use stainless screws..

There are far worse metals than stainless that ali reacts to. We use parbury, that is a sika competitor and i believe that it's a great product...
But black tesa tape is and adequete isolator . Strange but true:rolleyes:

The worst thing is the salt. If you keep the metals clean, you will have no dramas. Just have a simple isolation. And the sika will do that for you:headbang:

just an added thought, does anyone use the drop in 3 in 1 rod holder that drops into the flush mount? and are they strong enough for jews and kingies? they seem to be popular withthe snapper fishos in vic.

Yeah Bees !
I did my appenticeship working on Aircraft & know quite a fair bit about Alloys & corrosion

Hairy I saw these on one of the fishing shows years ago & thought they were agreat idea dont know if you can buy them I built a set for each of my boats & they are brilliant.

Esp the way I fish using baitrunners this one below is welded in but the set on my bigger boat are removable

good idea dog, may come up with a variation on that.

Not my idea I just copied them but yes they are bliliant, no fumbling trying to get rod out of holder just pick the rod straight out.

Rod tips down low great when there's wind blowng even if you're not using free spool [baitrunners] if a fish strikes rod tip goes down locks rod handle into slot.

I wouldn't recomend them to troll out of you'll lose your tackle :rolling laughter:

was thinking along your idea mulloway. my incorporate a laynard for trolling. quintrex, was thinking of the flush mount ones that drop into the gunnells on the boat after you drill a hole

Hairy you may want to look at holders made by Sailmaster Products. They are a good middle of the road holder, well made of quality material.

Most of the big chandlerys will carry them or if you have problems locating a source ring the factory at Caringbah. I have found them to be very helpfull.

Like the set up posted by Dog, this is typical of the type of rig that the snapper fishermen in Port Phillip Bay use. But, you will have to be carefull not to end up with an almighty tangle of lines.

I read an article recently where the author explained how he fished 6 rods (three each side) He uses different weight sinkers on each of the set of three rods.

The first rod is cast at right angles to the boat and has the heaviest sinker, the next at 45 degrees , then the last one of three directly behind the boat using the lightest sinker. Makes sense to me.

My boat has two Sailmaster holders set into the top face of the inner transom. These are straight holders and can be used to mount a bait board (most of the time) or as a way of mounting multiple angled holders, or simply as 90 degree holders for two rods.

I make my own, this is one design.

And these are alloy ( cheaper ) but can be made with Stainless just as easy. They can easily be moved from one holder to another anywhere around the boat.

Sorry I did not get back to you sooner Hairy, the factory is in Cawarra rd however they do not deal direct with the public. They are very helpfull if you ring them.

Hunts Marine at Blakehurst had them last time I looked.
