hi guys,
just curious about exceeding rated hp size. i have a 3.6 quintrex fishnipper (96 model). the rated max hp size is 15hp. would there be any problems putting a 25hp?

any suggestions, ideas, advice, recommendations?

thanks

There is a safety tolerance put on by boat manufacturer's by that I mean boats can take more HP than what they are rated @ the amount I really dont know !

Having said that I wouldn't want to put a 25 hp outboard on the back of your boat withoutdoing some work to it 1st.

All you have is what looks like a 25 mm round tube as a brace & I bet my short & curlies it's not even fully welded in.

Prob you'll face with a bigger motor is force on your transome & you really do need better bracing along with gussets welded into the corners none of which can be seen in your pic.

Another thing you'll want to consider is insurance if mods aren't done correctly & approved any claim that you may make can be disputed & declined.

I think I would be agreeing with DC. There simply isn't sufficant strength in the back of that boat to take a 25hp.
It could be braced up suitably with a bit of work to cope with a much bigger motor.
But once again why?. There is a tremendous difference between a 15 and a 25 hp.
Insurance is the main issue, not so much insurance on repairing the boat should some mishap accur, but personal insurance, should you injure a passenger or another person involved anyway with the boat.
Personal bodily insurance could cost you everything you own and maybe more, could cost you for the rest of your life.
It just is not worth the risk.
In any case, if you do modify the boat and put on a larger motor, get it re rated, otherwise you are running the gauntlet.
And I don't mean to sound like I am giving you a lecture, but it is just something that you should think about and get in touch with Quintrex to see if it would be legal.

thanks guys for the advice, must appreciated. ill just stick to the 15hp to be on the safe side of everything. i thought the same thing about bracing to make the transom stronger but just needed to know what you guys thought aswell.

well, im after a 15 hp short shaft prefer 95 model and up in good working condition. if anyone knows or is selling one, let me know.

thanks again.
