Im thinking about putting a Scotty downrigger on my little 4m tinnie so I can get into some larger kings. I can spin them up when they're busting the surface, but theyre all rats. I want to go for some around the meter mark, but $500 once I have the right bracket and bomb is alot to spend. Does anyone have a downrigger and is it useful enough to warrant the outlay??

Some will say yes others like me say not really.
Depends on how you want to use the downrigger trolling or just sending down a live bait ??
Again there's methods both ways of fishing without the use of a downrigger.
If you dont want to spend the money you can also rig up your own setup & all you'll need is to buy the bomb wire mainline & release clip.
As far as gauging depth goes just crimp every so many meters & there's your depth gauge.
I'm not a fan of fishing for Kung Fu Fush think I got sick of them many years ago when the jigging craze was on I got lazy & used to let my outriggers do all the work on a lumpy day bugger that jiggy jiggy thingy.
But like I said there's other methods to catch them leadlining is very effective but not really sporting

Bass F they r quite useful in certain circumstances, tho as DC said not 4 everyone.
before you buy one try rigging up the butt section of an old game rod with an alvey or similar old reel and 150-200lb braid, and run the bomb and clip off that.
voila
portable d'rigger that fits in your rod holder
if you r fishing inshore you can mount it under your transducer too and then youll see how deep you r on the sounder
if you like that then you can buy one, a scotty depthmaster is perfect for a 4m tinnie, which btw you should be able to find for closer to $300 on ebay

Yeah thanks heaps guys. I might just use an old short stroker I have with an alvey loaded with 80lb.
I might talk to Ben at my local and see If he can do me a deal on a cheap 8lb bomb and a clip??
I plan to do some down rigging the morning of the 20th around west head and some spots back towards scottie island. Then I'll bring the kings down to the bbq at the basin. Am I sounding sure of my self or what???:rolling laughter:
