Well after not so good results in my last 4 outings limited results 90% flatones, I decided to give the SP's a miss today & fish baits & a good move that was.

Good tide right wind allowed me to anchor the way I like fished Borany Bay snuck out after lunch back in by 5 pm.

Kept the 1st 3 fish & released the rest a good steady arvo with hits every 10 minutes or so only marred around 4 pm when every bait got taken by a bloody pt jackson thats when I called it a day.

Reds were still there I could see them on the sounder & a bonus today was no undersized fish all were legal.

These were around 35 cm's & one would've gone around 40 cm's didn't count but safe to say over a doz fish overall.

Top fish DC, that size they are the best, sweetest eating. Now did you really catch them inside Botany Bay or was that a "porkie".

Also what did you mean by "the way I like to anchor", s'okay, I won't tell anyone.

Cheers

great report DC
pinkies are still fun to catch no matter what size they are...
i remember catching 14 undersized pinkies one day...it was good fun even though they where all under.

Maurice all I ever use these days is pilly's but I allways take some salted ones with me as well dont allways use them but if peckers are about they are the go.

Striped tuna is another very good bait but I dont get outside a great deal these days to catch any I stock up on slimey fillets when they're about as well salt, brown sugar then freeze them allways nice & moist when thawed.

Again burley is a must & I just chop up the pilly's into very small cubes.

Rigs well they vary is peckers are about more lead cast wide & let current bring it to burly trail today not much current very small lead running to hook but the most important thing in my books & the reason why I'll out fish many if not all is I never use heavier than a 3 kg outfit.

Haji I took the little boat & neally never venture outside in it they were caught in the Bay itself of Bare Isle but you have to know how to fish the place lost count of how many boats I've seen shaking the heads in disbelief watching us pull in one after the other & they dont even get a nibble.

Been fishing that spot for well over 20 years & back in the good old days 5 kg snapper were very common brothers best was around 7 kg & mine was 8.3 kg all on 3kg tackle reason being they wouldn't touch anything heavier & let me tell you didn't we blow some good fish & still do.

Also what did you mean by "the way I like to anchor", s'okay, I won't tell anyone.

Anything bar a nor easter is a bitch on this spot the trick is where you position yourself & a nor easter works the best can even take the big boat there in a nor easter mostly the lirrle one cause it's centre concol & it's a bit more accomidating to a bad wind as far as where the lines end up.

TOM I DONT KNOW WHETHER ANYONE HAS EVER TOLD YOU THE NAMES ORIGINALLY GIVEN TO SNAPPER DURING VARIOUS STAGES OF THEIR GROWTH.

THEY WERE, COCKNEY BREAM FOR THE SMALLEST BAIT STEALING RUNTS, THEN RED BREAM FOR KEEPERS FOLLOWED BY SQUIRE (THE SIZE OF DC'S FISH) AND FINALLY SNAPPER ONCE THEY GOT THEIR HUMP AND OLD-MEN SNAPPER.

TC ROUGHLEY THE RENOWNED FISH RESEARCHER AND SUPERINTENDANT OF FISHERIES FROM 1939 TO 1952 IN HIS BOOK "FISH AND FISHERIES OF AUSTRALIA" (MY BIBLE WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE) SAID THAT THE TRANSITIONAL STAGES ARE QUITE ARBITRARY BUT THAT AT ABOUT 1.5 IMPERIAL POUNDS A RED BREAM BECOMES A SQUIRE AND AT A WEIGHT OF 3 IMPERIAL POUNDS "A SQUIRE EARNS THE DIGNITY OF BEING CALLED A SNAPPER"

DC, IS THAT ALSO YOUR RECCOLECTION OF THE VARIOUS NAMES?

AND BY THE WAY TOM, IF YOU CAN EVER GET YOUR HANDS ON ROUGHLEYS BOOK AT A SECOND HAND SHOP BUY IT. THE COLOUR PLATES OF FISH ALONE ARE WORTH HAVING. I MAY TRY TO SCAN SOME OF THEM LATER AND POST THEM.

CHEERS.

Yeah those were Squire

They've got many names I call that size Reddies & the bigger ones Reds

Hane heard peeps call them pinky's but that name is not relevant to the species @ all & if you told me you caught a pinky I would be assuming that you were refering to the perch you catch on reefs like the Peak they are pinky & the local name is pinky's.

I'm not a big fish eater & release just about everything 2day's keep was for my oldies but I'll allways keep pinky's[perch] they are very nice eating.

Tom the bay is always alive with those undersized reddies usually a pain in the rear end cause they are so aggresive & the bigger fish dont stand a chance when they're around but they are very good fun on light gear & when in the mood they really go the SP's think thats when they fight the best.

Those humps on the larger snappers heads are a result of them head butting reef looking for food

Some very nice snapper for inside the bay. Yes they are still there if you know how, and very few fisho's remember the good holes.
Haji the proper name for snapper funny enough and can be debated is Schnapper I believe it was a popular choice sometime in the 30's to officially change it to Snapper. Another myth is old man snapper, most of these are actually female.
And Pinkies YUMMMMM the best tasting fish in the sea, can also be debated and is a matter of taste.

Hey DC, if you are ever looking for company on a weekday trip to BB or want to join me in my boat send me a PM. I would love to learn more about catching reddies in BB and being "semi retired" and clients permitting I can get away during the week if I get a day or so's notice.

How's that for a sneaky post to get the good oil!

:rolling laughter:

Cheers.

Spur of the moment with me Haji & generally only fish in the bay during the week to many clowns out on weekends.

Took alot for me to get motivated today been feeling up the sh*t of late quacks had me on roids & decided to take me off them.

Now I'm going on some new stuff hopefully I'll be back to energetic again but if I do make plans then thats generally motivation enough to get back out there.

Only prob when you make plans is the bloody weather allways sruffs things up

I dont have any probs taking you out just warning you I have to be feeling ok

Frank

The holes are still there Frank just not the big fish anymore

The Bay has snapper all year round time of year will determine the size

My personal view is they turned Botany Bay into a fish sanctuary a long long time ago & peeps just dont know about it.

Oil wharf is a good example home to just about every type of fish from snapper, bream Kings & not to mention the amount of Jew there they'll kick us away with that 100 meter zone but all the fish are around the pylons.

I used to do the sneaky sneaky many moons ago & put a lirrle 12 ft'r in off the beach @ kurnell little 6 hp motor on the back run under the wharf so they couldn't see me & geez I caught some fish doing that.

Back when they were building the container terminal you were actually allowed in there pull up down the end there & you could see the Jew chasing baitfish in 3 ft of water.

3rd runway in between the 2 tunways were some of the best flathead grounds in the bay & I'm sutr they still are but now they've put those yellow makers in all around the runways & it's a no go zone.

The water aurhority have really stuffed the Bay you cant keep changing mother nature & expect the fish to be there in the no's they used to be
