WENT SQUIDING FROM THE YOWIE BAY WHARF LAST NIGHT. DID NOT CATCH ANY SQUID BUT DID GET A SMALL CUTTLEFISH (SEE PICS) WHICH WAS PROMPTLY DECORATED WITH A PAIR OF HOOKS AND SENT OUT TO WELCOME ANY JEWIES THAT MIGHT BE VISITING THE AREA.

NO LUCK, SO CAME ON HOME AT AROUND 10PM.

THOUGHT THAT SOME OF OUR YOUNGER OR "NEW TO FISHING" MEMBERS MIGHT LIKE TO SEE WHAT A CUTTLEFISH LOOKS LIKE. THIS ONE DID NOT SEEM TO HAVE THE TWO LONG TENTACLES THAT BIGGER ONES HAVE (AT LEAST AS LONG AS THEIR BODY AND USED TO GRAB THEIR PREY)

THE BIG EYES ARE A FEATURE OF CUTTLEFISH WHICH ARE REPUTED TO GO VERY DEEP WHERE THEY NO DOUBT NEED THOSE BIG EYES TO SEE IN THE POOR LIGHT.

AS I LOOK AT THE EYES I CAN'T GET A PICTURE OF MY MOTHER IN LAW OUT OF MY MIND. I DON'T KNOW WHETHER IT IS THE MOURNFULL LOOK OR THE TENTACLES! (hope she doesn't read this or I am in trouble)

Haji. Here's one I got off Wollongong a few years ago.http://www.fishnet.com.au/content/fishnet/images/gallery/c65d7bb540b905b1aa9ba2ef2d7c1248.jpg

My mate gaffed it for me and we had bait for some time.
That ugly piece of cuttle caught some beautiful Snapper.

Hi Frank & all.
Back in my spearfishing days I would always look for fish and crays in both small and large caves, sometimes with large strands of kelp sweeping backward and forward accross the cave openings.(typically "Voodoo Reef" at Boat Harbour)

I ALWAYS got a hell of a fright when upon entering a cave there was one or two big cuttlefish just hanging there in the gloom of the cave looking at me with those big googly eyes and their tentacles hanging down. Truly the stuff of nightmares.

Mind you, after I got over the initial shock I did often spear them and give them to my Italian neighbour at the time.

Cheers

they are some big cuttle fish, i have never come across any big one when fishing or in the water but i have come across some massive "bones" (i guess you could call them) floating about when fishing

Im pretty sure as well that they (the big reds and the small browns) r two different types of cuttlefish. The big sea dwellers and the small estuary counterparts.
