View Full Version : Steber 475DF project
I have decided to bite the bullet and sell the Steber without a motor.
Anyone looking for a project of this size boat, this is a easy fix.
Buy a suitable 70 hp motor, strap it on and you have a boat that will see you through a few years.
It aint real pretty as she sits at the moment but the floor and transom are solid and all it needs to look the part again is a bit of slight cosmetic cracking on the interior and several drill holes where things have been fitted and removed to be fixed. And if your fussy a paint job.

It has heaps of well placed rodholders 8, berley bucket, bait tank ( needs plumbing ) 27 radio. Boat has full 12 mths rego and trailer has till august 2008, will throw an emergency spare wheel in.
To get on the water and have a fish all this boat needs is a motor fitted.
I am asking around $2000 as it sits.
And don't be afraid to ask any questions. inspections welcome.
I am going to put it on Ebay if no one here wants it.

Hey Frank,
I may be interested, have you any pics of the inside etc, how many metres is it?? I have a 4.5m nautiglass, just wondering how much bigger than mine it is.
Will it move ok for 12 months of fishing with a 40hp on it?
Mick. I am working 10-2 mon tue wed and 8-12 thurs and fri.
Pipp. It is 4.75 m 15' 6" . not a lot bigger then yours. I had a 55hp on it and was OK but I think it would be a bit of a slug with 40 hp.
Send me your email via PM and I will send more pictures.

Wayne...Pip's engine will push it along fine, won't break any speed records but as he's out solo it would do the job fine....Fair bit heavier than your current boat Pip but after seeing HSV-Mick's which is the same hull you would really enjoy the extra space! Believe there's a little internal glass work to be done from HSV's comments afret seeing your boat Frank---more than happy to lend a hand there PIP if you decide to launch HMAS-Pip2.
Mick has seen Franks boat what's your opinion there Micky!!!

the 40 might use a lot of petrol probly bet to sell what you got in working order pip look for a good 70 hp maybe 2/3 thousand for mid nintys

Yeah while its getting onto the plane but once planing would be comparable to his current boat and to using a larger engine at the same rev's.....
More important question is shaft length Frank....I'm guessing long??? Pip you know if yours is a long shaft? Worst comes to worst we can do a midnight raid on the Hoz-Mans boat and fit a nice new engine for ya Pip.:rolling laughter:
Maurice. The Steber is a good honest hull. She needs plenty of TLC and a bit of resin to bring her up to something decent looking.
I have had this boat for about 11 years, I had a 55hp evenrude on her and used it mainly down at Bermagui.
I used to take it outside to the 4 and 6 mile reefs all the time and she never let me down.
Only ever used to change gear oil once a year, clean plugs ( think I only bought 2 sets of new plugs in 11 years ) put a couple of impellas in her and renewed the thermostat once and have replaced one of the coils and starter motor and solonoid. That's it's service history since I owned it.
The trailer has new gal springs is a tilt trailer and probably could do with the rollers being serviced, as the boat has not been off it for the last 18 months, so is probably stuck to the rollers by now.
There is no seats, cause I don't have seats in boats. The cuddy cab is too small to have a bunk in there, just a place for storing stuff in out of the weather, although at a push you could get in there out of the rain.
It would be far better to put a canopy on it. I do have one here somewhere that I made for it, but the frame is all bent up, cause a mate towed the boat back from Glenborne dam with the canopy up and it wasn't good for it.
As I said the boat has 8 rod holders in good positions, there is a rough old bait cutting board that sits at the back ( removable just slips into a couple of extra rod holders, so 10 if you count these ), the live bait tank needs some work and has a automatic pick up. I have pulled all the wiring out of it so that has to be now re done, nav lights radio etc. It comes with either a 50 litre alloy fuel tank or 2 x 22 ltr metal tanks, whichever is prefered. I ran the 50 for years without any problems, but 2 tanks filled from bifferent stations is always a good idea. It has a water seperator with it.
Not much else I can say about the old girl.
And yes it is a long shaft 20" transom.
We could always fit the 40 and take it for a spin down the georges to see if it would push it along.

Think you better check that comment Frank
Well half of it anyway
Long shafts are 16" & Ultra shafts are 20"
The boat will take any standard 16 " long shaft motor & for the record there's no such term as short shaft thats old hat & you should be looking @ shollow ski boats for that term.
Don't tell me I am going to have trouble with YOU now.
Old term or not the general consensus of motor shaft lengths are short 16" long 20" mid long 22" and extra long 25".
Noboby ever users any other language when talking about shaft lengths on outboards. Unless you talk with Kerry ( god help yah ).

That was the old system long time ago but if walked into a dealer today & asked for a long shaft you would be given a 16 "
Unless you talk with Kerry
I reckon Kerry was good value irrellevant what peeps thought of him loved taking the piss out him when I disagreed but did agree with him on alot of issues as well.
Couldn't help thing @ times he was a google search sort of guy but some of his replies were straight out of the head
Pip I have seen franks boat she is in good nick all she needs is a good clean and polish on the outside. maybe rip it down the M5 at 200kms to get the spider webs out :tease: . and just some glass work on the inside. apart from that she is good. I was going to by her but i just was to eager to get a boat...and my one cam up so i bought it ..My boat goes around the 30 knot(according to my GPRS) mark and it has a 75hp mariner. i would be looking in that range buddy...chuck motor on and we can meet up and cruise together :gay: ...ask stef his been on my boat and he can tell you how she rides....i might be looking to upgrade my motor soon....

hey guys, i've seen Frank's boat as well. As he said she's a very solid boat.
As the guy on micks link wants for his boat around 12k, you can make a profit over it too.

Boris to be honest i think his asking a bit to mich for the boat it could be because his a dealer and cause of the motor....
Yes that boat although in exceptional good condition and newish motor is well over priced and that's the problem with buying new motors for old boats. Good idea if you are goung to keep them but not a great idea if you are going to sell.
He will have that boat for a long time unless he drops the price dramatically.

I'll give 2 Chickens & a Duck for your boat Mick

far out that is generous are they laying hens but :pottytrain1: :pottytrain1:
The duck that lays the golden egg.
The motor is 6 years old so you would expect it to have lost at least 1/2 it's new price, say $4200 when new would bring that down to $2100 so put approx $5000 for boat and trailer and you have $ 7100.
That would be my top dollar if I was to be interested in buying it.
Frank
frank fair enough... but if DC gives me a duck that lays golden eggs ill just by a new boat ...frank did you get my PM
"frank did you get my PM"
I have now, and answered.
