G'day all,
a couple of questions. Does anyone knows if there is a law against lengthening a tiler steer on an outboard.
I currently have a 11ft tinny but it gets uncomfortable after a couple of hours sitting on a cushion with no back rest. I'm looking at getting a swivel seat but i can only position it on the second(middle) seat. I will then have to extend the tiller arm so that i can steer from there. Any ideas on how this can be done. I have seen a piece of PVC pipe used before but it my be too thick to hold in one hand.
Cheers

Ive seen this done plenty of times and i dont really think whether it is legal or not is an issue. Cant see that it is breaking any laws.

The old piece of PVC tube is an oldie but a goodie and does work. Its a bit harder to hang on to but it better that nothing. Also seen yabbie pumps used too !

Sitting in the middle of an 11 footer gives a good ride too on most tinnies.

Shouldent be a problem.

Good luck :D

Be a bit of a drama making sharp, unexpected, quick turns!

She gets up on the plane pretty easy and dances along the top of chop fairly comfortably so that aspect isn't a concern, it's just a comfort factor.

I'm thinking of using it when trolling although i could set up a harness so i don't get thrown out at top speed if i have to take evasive action. :D

cheers guys thanks for your reply

blacky,

we used to use a yabby pump in my father's old 10' dinghy until he made a pvc extension for it - one word of warning though, don't forget to tighten up the shaft bushes so that if the extension does come off the tiller steer you will keep going in a relatively straight line - last thing you need is for the torque of the motor to throw it onto maximum lock [otherwise you may become airborne]

G'day Blacky
They sell something you're after at most good boat shops.
Is this what you're thinking of?

I don't know for sure but I suspect it's not illegal. It would certainly save you getting 45 degrees to the water to get on the plane.

That extension from wittworths looks good. In fact i wish they had them when i used to tear around the Tomago River as a young bloke. The old pipe slipped off once or twice. Not pleasant.

Blacky,
You can have my old pvc extension if you like, I have converted from tiller to side console recently. I used a 60mm pvc, which fitted over the handle, joined to a 50mm pvc which was the extension and fitted better in the hand. As has been said, watch out, tighten the bushing screw, and make sure the extension fits snuggly. I had the pvc tube slip once at full throttle in middle harbour :? I did manage to stay in the boat but was thrown from one side to the other very quickly and the boat did a nice 360 turn. (full throttle was around 25 to 30 kts)
It certainly is more comfortable to do with the tiller extension, but you have to be careful. I think the tiller extension which the guys have linked to above would be the go as you can tighten it up.
