I have been approached by an phd student who needs a bull shark dead or alive. She would preferably like to go out and catch it with whoever can do it.
If anyone is keen or does catch one could they leave me pm or reply to this post.
Do we need to follow any particular procedure if we do catch one Kriss? I mean should it be bled, left whole, iced,...........??????
I too am more interested in Bashir's question.....LoL :)

She said she would do a post today on what was required and what the project is all about . I am pretty sure that a complete shark is what she want, guts and all. It is for research.
As for Bashirs question, she sounds nice over the phone!!
Hello,
There seems to be more interest in Bashir's question than in my bull shark..?
Well I am hardly going to answer that one... but will gladly talk about bull sharks!
I am doing a load of prep work for a PhD and fishers and spearfishers are going to be a prime source of information in the initial stages so I am interested to know:
1) anything you know and care to share about where you have seen them, how you have caught them etc. I have spoken to a few guys that are unsure of how to identify a bull shark from similar species - I have I.D. information I can email out or post online if you are unsure.
2) Catching bulls:Yes, ideally, I would love to come out if anyone is going out and expects to catch one.
3)Should you catch one (juveniles can have a dark tip on dorsal fin) I would love a photo and description of where/when/how it was caught. If it is dead and you are willing to donate it to science please call and I will arrange to pick it up - it would end up preserved with the Australian Museum after analysis. If you catch one and happen to have a tank to keep it alive for a short period ...or are near to either OceanWorld or Sydney Aquarium then please call.
4)And finally, I am going to organise a presentation/discussion session and barbecue at the new marine research institute in Sydney for anyone interested in contributing to or learning more about shark research in the Sydney region. If you are interested in coming along or can suggest someone you think ought to be there, let me know to put your name on the invitation list.
My number is 0403 814 393
Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

I think that would be very helpful if info was posted. I have added a picture of a shark that we caught a while ago. I don't think it is a bull shark, but I am sure someone here can tell me.

Hi Sacha
You mentioned that you wanted fishos and spear fishos to help. From all the media it seems that the wakeboarders are the best lures to attract theses sharks in Cowan Creek. Canoes and rowboats work best in Sydney Harbour.
Sorry I couldnt help myself.
From the encounters that I have had on Pittwater and these are rare, you need someone with big game gear to have a chance.
These sharks are big and as you would know love dirty water and seem to work their way up river after alot of rain. They require a fair amount of burley to attract them and a fair amount of luck to hook one up.
The sea-planes at Palm Beach sometimes spot sharks in Pittwater and maybe a helpful source of information.
For my money I would target Sydney Harbour and contact the now banned trawlers etc to see if they encountered these sharks and of course the best time to chase them.
Best of luck
Good luck with your study
Welcome aboard Phd,
I personally cant help but i am sure someone here can or point you in the right direction.... :)
And as for Bashir's question.......Boys being boys, thats all
Have fun & best of luck

You dont hear of too many caught in NSW but anecdotally they do seem to be prevelant enough. Last I heard was the guy just off rushcutters who netted a big one.
You could also try the beach netters they would turn one or two up amongst all the turtles dolphins and dugongs
I did state in the other thread that my best friend hooked two a month ago near Gladesville off land fishing for Jews, one was approx. 50kg and the other which he lost was over 100kg. I believe i could try again for them in the coming weeks with him and let you know. It is possible in the weeks to come i believe, i will keep you's informed.
There is a hole up the Parra River that holds them, i can give this away to someone that is willing to give it a go if we are not able to.
Kamil.
Thanks for the interest so far and a good few leads!
I will check with the site operators and figure out the best way to post the information on how to i.d. a bull shark from the other species.
As for the hole in the parramatta river - I would be keen to know where that is, and if anyone is going out and has space on the boat I would be keen to come along.
As for getting tip-offs from the seaplane guys - I will look into that one - it would be interesting to find out how easy it would be to distinguish the different species from the air...
As for the now-banned trawlers in Sydney, if anyone has a contact for any of the guys or their association that would be great.
And Kamil, I would love to talk to your best friend about the bulls he caught - any chance you could put us in touch? And the hole up the paramatta river would be good to know too if you are willing to part with the information.
Thanks again guys,
Sacha
Have we got an update on the study?
Just curiuos thats all
hi phd, hi all!
I will be able to burley up and tackle the shark for you. If you let me know where the hole is via private message I will gladly head out and catch one.
