I was in Big W the other day pottering around and came across some Beachworm SP's. They looked the goods but I was wondering if anyone has used them and if so the success rate. I would be looking at using them off the beach for whatever fancies them.

The whiting I have always caught have been with bait. Not sure if they mouth the SP they would quickly drop it or run off with it so their mates don't get it. I suppose only time would tell but interested in other opinions

I have used the Gulp sandworms Mado

And yep have gotten whiting on them but the prob with them is the toads & leather jackets have a fetish for them as well so they get pretty chewed up.

Another thing I was not wary of @ the time cause I'd only just started using SP's was that I left the pack open & all the sandworms dried up.

Even worse they didn't taste to good when I tried one :rolling laughter:

I read up on the sandworm thread Steff. Some good info there

I don't expect the leatheries to be hanging around the beach so the toads will be the only possible problem. Will also be using them at the mouth of The Entrance. The worms are the exact image of a beachworm with the mother of pearl look about them. Next....I will have to try and find a jig head to match or I will just put them on a general purpose rig and pretend they are bait. Weight will be the conundrum off the beach with the movement of water though.

Drying out will no doubt be a problem so they will have to stay in the tacklebox/backpack for those I'm not using :smiile:

Thanks for the replies lads :ohhh yeah:

i have some too... but they are like 3 to 4 inches long ... i am wondering what hook size to use? Jig head or unweighted?

Normal jig head weights of 1/32 -1/6th, No 2 - 1/0 hooks depending on wind, current & depth or retrieve styles.

I usually cut the 6" in half. They also now make them in 2" which are fine but steer clear of the 4" the are no good for use with a jig head, way too thin, but could work fine used like a bait under a sinker, if thats your game.

Just keep them in thier bags or you can now buy them in a bucket in gulp juice (Gulp Alive) its called, retails for around $28 a bucket with around 30ish in there from memory & can be restocked with the packets at around $9 for 12.

use this idea it works

heres a rig out of a fishing world mag.

jig head - 1/50th oz to 1/40th oz in No.2 to No.4

2nd hook - No.8 to No.10 bait holder

Part A - tying the rig
1. using a uni knot or similar, tie a leader to the ribbed part of the lead keeper.
2. cut the leader about 6cm below the knot attached to the lead keeper.
3. tie the baitholder hook to the end of the leader.
4. tie the rig on to your main line via the eyelet on the jig head.

Part b - rigging the SP

1. thread the SP worm on the the jig head and push over the lead keeper (do not bunch the worm up on the hook).
2. insert the baitholder hook into the worm just below the jighead and pull the hook through the worm so that the attached line is also pulled through the plastic. repeat this serveral times. hook the bait hold through the lower part of the worm and leave exposed. this should leave the line and hooks hidden quiet well with in the worm.

fishing with this rig.

1. cast onto sand flat or shaded area near bank and let line go slack till the worm hits the bottom (watch for strikes on drop).
2. let the worm rest on bottom for 10-20 seconds then jerk the rod tip straight up about 10-20 cm but make sure it goes start up and not back then let the worm drop again leave for 10-20 seconds and repeat.

hopefully this should help some catch some fish im going to try it as soon as i get some worms.
