Well after smashing that free piranha rod to bits one morning whilst a bit frustrated it seems I'm in the market for a new setup! What a piece of crap!

I'm looking for a solution that will let me go for some squid and smaller fish like bream, and flathead etc but I'm also looking for something to use when fishing for Kingies later on in the year once things start heating up again.

I guess I'm after an all rounder with a bit of grunt under the bonnet when needed. Maybe I need 2 reels, one light one heavy.

I really like the look of overhead spinner reels!

My price range is about the $200 - $300 mark.

Can anyone provide me with some advise?
That would be great.

Cheers!

Honky!

Honky!

I'd go a tough stick mate. Decent price from Big W - then spend the rest on a really good Reel.

Never really understood why people use overheads. Maybe somebody can clear up why they're better?

Dunks.

Sounds like you need 2 rods & a decent spinning reel,
suggestions for rods are berkley drop shots 1, 6'6" 2-4kg for your bream & squid & 1, 6'6" 3-5kg for your hevier out fit, about $90 each, probably one of the best value graphite rods on the shelf. I use Struddies but they are out of the price bracket you mensioned.
Buy the best spinning reel you can with the rest of your $300 reel size of say 3000-3500 maybe the new Daiwa regal its around that price range, $100ish.
Or maybe just the 3-5kg & get a even better reel, it does make a difference, less expensive reels do eventually wear out no matter who manufactures them, due to wear & salt water so if you use your gear alot, upgrade your reel to the best you can afford. It'll pay you back in the long run.

Hope this helps you...

Hey Beats,

Thanks for your helpful advise mate, much appreciated.
Looks like I may be going shopping tonight so I'll check out the Berkley Rods and the Daiwa reel you so kindly suggested.

All the best and I'll let you know how I go!

Thanks,

Honky

happy shopping mate, but don't forget, the best reel you can afford. it will pay you back by lasting you longer.

the dropshots (as mentioned) or raiders are great rods for the price. For heavier take a look at the Shimano Backbone range, good rods at a reasonable price.
