Just picked up boat and trailer.....Trailer needs a lot of work and might just build a new one with my cousin based on the spec's of the old one....Anyone rego'd a home made trailer before and if so how difficult do the RTA make it.

Plastics old trailer is unreg, hasn't been rego'd since 2001....Has no compliance plate but has old rego label still attached- Rego label has no vin number on it.....
More interested in the process of registering a home made trailer...Do I need to apply for a VIN, then take it for a blue slip and then pay the rego fees and all's done? Do I need to get a weighbridge ticket for it???

Well then yes all the above , get blue slip , weigh tcket , and then all the rest. If you ask R T A they will tell you what process and will have locations for blue slip in your area.
Jason. You could register the old trailer then transfer lable etc.
To register a new home made trailer, you need to get a stat deck and proof of your material purchases etc. You then need weighbridge certificate, blue slip. It's not a big deal but some inconvenience.
When you get your blue slip the inspector will more then likely advise you to call the trailer a 2nd hand one that just ran out of rego, rather then calling it a new one.
The blue slip guy does most of the hard work for you, in regards to getting all the paper work done.
You still need all the documents though.
I have registered quiet a few trailers.

Frank ! you cant do that simply because the old trailer sounds like it's RAT****E & wont pass the Blue Slip Inspection unless you get a shonky inpector to pass it.
However what you can do is have a look on the rego papers if you have them ??
They are a lifesaver on those papers you'll find a VIN no & the Trailers Tare Weight now if you have those just stamp the vin no into the new trailer then go get a blue slip no need for a weighbridge certificate.
If you haven't got the old reo papers then you'll need a weighbridge certificate then go see a blue slip inspector & he'll sully & stamp a new vin no into the trailer.

Thanks guys.....No old rego papers DC so no vin for me. Will have to go the weighbridge/blue slip then rego way........
just to check something,
1: I may just repair the old trailer and rego it as a unrego 2nd hand trailer-in doing this I gather I won't need the stat dec or reciepts for replaced stuff??
2: Alternatively I may use a mates never rego'd trailer(home made) that is complete and ready to go(just need to make then put skids on it)--could I rego this one as a unrego'd 2nd hand trailer??
Cheers

dont think there is sutch a thing as an unregoed 2hand regoed trailer .
Either way you go cause you dont have pappers you have to go through the whole process.
if you have no. plate then RTA can look it up and you just tell them you want to reregister it. they dont need to know what new parts you put on it, they dont care . as long as it has blue slip then its road safe.

Too many rules for rego's......:rolling laughter:
Cheers Plastics--will rego the old unrego'd trailer with bits from the other never rego'd trailer and make a new rego'd trailer from the two currently unrego'd 2nd hand trailers...one of which has never been rego'd but seeing as the other has and I have old plate No on old rego sticker, rego with blue slip should be fine avoiding the other rego bits of weighbridge/reciepts required for rego of a home made trailer!
Lovin the RTA:confused2:

I've built trailers & registered them in the past but this is what I suggest you do.
1stly you should have a reciept of purchase from the guy who sold you the boat & trailer ???
Take that reciept to the RTA as proof of ownership of the trailer they wont care about the boat You'll need the name of last registered owner & if there's still a no plate on the trailer this will make life alot easier for you.
Now if RTA aren't being bitch's it will cost you $15 for them to print off a renewal notice & on this notice you'll have the vin no & tare weight.
This will save you having to drag the trailer off to a weighbridge [ without the boat on it ] to get it weighed which coasts around $30 for the certificate.
2: Alternatively I may use a mates never rego'd trailer(home made) that is complete and ready to go(just need to make then put skids on it)--could I rego this one as a unrego'd 2nd hand trailer??
No !
Keep the trailer as light as possible the less weight means less fee's involved no need to add skids , rollers etc all the blue slip guy is interes in, is the trailer /frame , lights etc.

Righto DC...I'm getting the picture so seeing as the trailer I just bought with the boat has no plates, can't see the VIN stamped or plated anywhere on the frame, has been out of rego since 2001 but has the old rego label still attached to the winch post but the label doesnt state the vin No nor the tare weight I'm guessing I will need to go through the whole process of weighbridge, blue slip then rego....Is that correct?
Appreciating the help!:beerchug:

The old rego sticker will tell you Sierra Foxtrot Alpha
But it will tell you the last registed no's on the number plate & it should be enough to get the RTA to provide you with the old vin number & Tare weight.
What I'd be doing if I were you is to have a very very good look over the trailer either for a compliance plate or the vin number which mat be stamped on the trailer.
If stamped the most likely place to look is on the draw bar.

Cheers DC, will have a good look for VIN No this arvo, Pretty sure theyre usually stamped on the left side when looking at the front of the trailer so will start sanding off paint there....BC, CC can you recall where the VIN was stamped on the trailer???
Hi Jason
If your boat is a tinnie make sure that you use teflon skids and not rollers on your trailer.
Given the relatively thin gauge metal of a tinnie rollers will (in time) leave indents in the bottom which will make it harder to launch and retrieve the boat as well as looking bad.
I modified the trailer for my little tinnie from rollers to skids and they work a treat.
Leave the keel rollers in place, you will still need them but get rid of any side rollers.
If you need any info on how to construct/fit the skids etc let me know and I will take some pics of my little boat trailer the next time that I go to Ulladulla.

i recently built a new traler for my wittle boat & it was easy to transfer the ID [vin number] manufacturer of the original trailer [Boeing] had it pop riveted onto the the drawarm so keep your eyes open for a small alloy plate as well dont overlook it thinking it's only crap no's on it if indeed you do have one riveted on.

Thanks for the tip Haji but as far as layout of skids goes will just use the original design, mind you the mounting brackets are just another thing I will have to weld on when the new rear support is welded into place.... The trailer has 3 centre rollers and two skids at the rear which are about 2ft long, will post pic's when I get a chance!
DC I'v had a good look today and there is no compliance plate or VIN stamped on the draw bar-also had a look (chipped away the paint) on the forward section of the frame and no luck so its the hard road for me!:ranting2:
