Hey guys quick report from an awesome day out today. Went out on the peacetrain again with Rokjok777, little swell, blue blue water and plenty of sun..... Snuck out off Busted bay looking for traps fads etc. water was about 24 close in so went to the dee why FAD. scored a few fish but nothing huge so went looking for something else. Found some good traps in about 90-100m of water with fish all over em. each pass got good hook ups, fish mostly from 55-70cms.
Kept 12 fish between 4 of us, had em on ice by 11am, but the water was so blue tho and we had taken out a mask/snorkel/speargun....... so we grabbed our balls in our hands and each had a spin cruising around trying to get some bigger dollies. Couldnt see the bottom obviously and had no real bearings when its just blue everywhere, but gotta say it was one of the more amazing things ive ever seen once i got the shark shark ideas out of my head......
There were dollies all around us on the surface, it seemed like 3 or 4 hundred but was probably only 100 of em. All the ones up top were smaller, but then beneath us at about 20m down there were some big dollies, and two @ least 10kg kings. The water clarity was unreal - i reckon you could see for 30-40m. Anyway we managed to spear one dolly (jeez fishing for em is so much easier than spearing) but the experience of just swimming out there (with a gun to ward off sharks} was well worth it.
And then in at 5 just in time to beat the storm...... :cooll:
t'was a great day
Ill put up some pics when i get emailed em.
Can't wait for the pics. Sounds awesome!

Garth, i guess sort of and sort of not. The traps are very often on the same grounds cos there is not that much reefy ground out wide for the pros to work. so knowing what depth and where they are likely to be helps. but today for example the BB trap grounds had no traps on it, so we had to keep going to find some more. We know where the fads r obviously so thats somewhere to go too, and we are always out there trolling too looking for current lines and birds etc so the bloke who is on look out usually sees the traps if we r within 500m of them (conditions depending), and we go investigate.....
Some days you get lucky - other days you fail and have to phone someone whos been out recently and get some marks......
and then there r some days there aint no traps to be found...
imnotafish,
when you say DY FAD are you refering to the FAD 8km from Sydney heads or the broken bay wide FAD?
cause i have heard on other sites that the broken bay wide FAD is gone.
cheers,
by the way. you are loose for jumping in. i'd be too scared.

Sydney North 33 36.946151 33.728 Broken Bay - 22kms 115metres
Long Reef 33 47.021151 22.700 Port Jackson - 8.5kms 50metres
Sydney East (peak) 33 59.316151 20.951 Botany Bay - 9.5kms 98metres
The Broken Bay FAD is a fair way out tho anyway and you would be better off trying the dee why fisheries one and following it up with the MHL one off Dee Why (coords on the MHL site)
I have heard the Broken Bay one is missing again this year?

garth the dolly's will be gone by the time you get out there :rolling laughter:
only kidding
dc,
i was out there last weekend and the dollies were gone!
the reality is that sydney fishing is hardcore. it's so depleted.
i'm a **** angler but i know that the majority of my poor results are due to depleted stocks.
yes you do here about guys catching stuff frequently but for an average joe it's pretty tuff.
i'm starting to stress out. summer will have come and gone and leave me with no decent fish hahaha.
i wanna get out there tom so bad but have to do stuff with the girl. dam.

Fishing is not as good as it used to be that I grant you even inside the bays etc.
But the fish are still there for those who know how to find them trick to offshore fishing is to be out there when the fish are about no good making plans for a week or 2 down the track sudden change in currents will take the fish with them then bring them back with a another change in current.
If you keep an eye on ocean currents you'll see they move in a rotational motion thats why the fish are here one week & gone the next.
I dont get out blue water fishing a great deal these days but let me tell you when I was right into it I did better than most & the main reason for that was simple I was out there when the fish were on & I fished when they were on very heavily.
if you could be bothered i'd love to see the photos mate.
cheers

Stef mate it's always a treat going out with you and Andy, what a great day we had...
for everyone who says they're afraid of jumping in, I'd just say: mine are brass and the size of grapefruits
JUST KIDDING
seriously though with the water clarity as good as it was, and with a nice powerful 1.2 meter speargun, jumping in the briny blue to have a look around is much safer than driving around Sydney or going to the pub in Manly....I kept checking behind me and reckon I could always use the spear to push The Landlord away until I swam back to the boat (that's what we called sharks in the States....The Landlord because They Own the Place!)
