Having a week up at the whitsunday coast and have managed a couple of trips onto the bay. The mackeral season is over and there are only bread and butter species being caught... right!!!:rolling laughter: Caught six grassy sweetlip on the first day, as well as a bunch of cod and tuskfish.
Second outing, saw the sweetlip size increase a bit, and they can really put up a fight. Caught four in an hour, around the 40 - 45 cm range. Loads of smaller, but still legal sized sweetlip were released, as there is a bag limit of six fish. Hooked a screamer, which snapped my 12lb line in 1.5 seconds. Seconds later, the 20lb outfit went off and a silver bullet went leaping across the bay. We had to pull the anchor , as it was spooling Phils reel. The fish came back towards the boat at speed, and there was lots of slack line in the water, when it suddenly went crazy and leaped a half dozen times in succession, and the water was thrashed to foam. Phil thought he had lost the fish, but I saw it at the back of the boat. still hooked. It took a few more runs, but was beaten. Gaffed it, and saw that a shark had taken a big bite out of it, explaining why it came in relatively easy, after the aerial display. Enjoying the fishing up here, but man is it hot and steamy.
