If going for herring (bored, no bass) they commit suicide on little fly/ant patterns, for bass I always go with crickets, moths or ...i thinkthey call them Dahlberg divers.
Try the poppers around pools at the bottom of rapids, much like...basins.

nice (ants) they look eazier to tie, herring sounds like good fun , i had an ball down at yarrmundi getting mullet they go mad. fly has been the new hobby as late. tying is an art im not quiet good at yet but its supprising ho fast a fish will take a hook with just coloured cotton around it. the flys ive been looking at at the tackel store are a bit expensive so tying is a must. thanks for your help
iv been readin up on flyin n theres alot of talk about short rods and long rods the one i got is 7.8 foot but its still a joke tryinto get it in to those tight spots for the big bass.
7.8 is fine Ricky, mine are all 9 except for the one I take in the yak which is around the same size as yours.
If you are really enjoying it & have not already got 1, save your hard earneds & buy a quality line, it makes a massive difference to your casting & if you ever get the chance do a class, It brings your casting along in a massive leap.
Expect to pay around $100+ for a good line though But it is worth it..

yeah just got the el cheep'o stuff what weight do you recon? at the moment i have 4, and does the colour really matter?
Color of fly line does not realy matter for bass & same weight as your rod says or with bass you can go 1 class up if the rod will take it, as presentation is not overly important & the fly hitting the water hard can sometimes be a +.

Hey beats !
What weight rod etc do you use for your salt water fushing ??
And what breaking strain backing line do you wind on 1st ????
I have a few sticks here & curious which weight you used was just about to spool up & thought I'd ask 1st
Not big on salt water fly DC, well pelagics anyway, but mates use a few raps of mono to stop braid spinning on spool, then spool up with 30lb-50lb braid as backing for the fly line.
As for the weight of rod & line to match & leaders, I suppose that depends on your target really, Rat Kings, Tailor & Sambos 5-8 weight I suppose, then up from 9-14 for the bigger critters.
Maybe someone else on here could enlighten us a little further if thats thier thing !!!
Stef, you would have to have a few crazy mates that like blisters on thier fingers wouldn't you ?
Is that a flueger DC looks same as my 1.

No mate it's a Browning.
Like I said only a novice to this fly fushing thingy done most other types of fishing & thought I'd give it a shot.
Last year I was in the hacking & had a bugger of a time getting hookups on the frigate mackeral using SP's & metal lures, but the guys on fly had no probs @ all.
Sorted out the lighter fly rod I think it's a 5-6# & has the smaller reel version I sometimes venture out bush last trip we camped on a beautifull spot, no good on the trout but boys did very well on the murray cod for the few hrs spent fishing for them.
But it's the salt water fly fushing I'm interested in @ present.
ps] does your flueger have a drag system ??? remember I'm a novice & been told drags aren't required on fly reels
yep, but don't think it's anything special tho, can get lever drag, large arbour jobbies for serious stuff I hear though.
Mine is just a medim arbour, same size as 1 in pic by the look of it, I use that 1 for fast sink line in dams. larger arbour is more forgiving on loops in sinking lines.

Like I said it's all new to me but tell you what they're a beautifully made reel, was thinking of using it as a roullete wheel :rolling laughter: just keeps spinning

D C you need to look up Sydney Fly fishing charters. Its run by Justin Duggins I know him and hes a pretty good bloke. Get on his web site and contact him via email he'll sort you out. Even better get a charter, Ive seen him casting at a 6ft whaler infront of lion island he tackles everything from the humble flathead right through to blue water pelagics.

Thanks Bass flicker
I've allways said if you want to learn how to fish then you need to be shown how.
I rate myself as a pretty good fisherman but this fly thingy is all new to me & like all aspects of fishing you really need to be shown to hard to read about it.
I used to make fun of a few mates who only wanted to fish fly one on them was into billfish on fly & I told him he was loopy de loop & that Marlins didn't eat fly's. :rolling laughter:
Anyways haven't spooled up yet but been praticing on catching trucks in the carpark & I'm getting pretty good with the casting side of it even caught a truck the other day bugger was spooling me so I had to chase him.
I'll have a look on that site to get an idea of rods etc but I'd like to get a bit better b4 getting out on the water with the rods.

Get hold of a DVD called 'lords of the fly'....some heavy saltwater action!~Will get some info from my mate who produced the DVD-his mates don't do anything but fly fish!
how can you seriously target marlin on fly and get results?
Do you drive around till you see em free jumping and then chase em or do you raise and instead of switch baiting bring lures in and slow boat down and flick flys. Don't get it.
Old mans got a fly rod. i took it up to bobbo head the other night and i learnt to not flick flys @ dusk. it was so hard to see. a shame cuz i think there were mini choppers about.
had no idea you could put braid on a fly rod. interesting.

storms I'm not a big lover of watching DVD's I tend to get very opionated about the guys who made them & pick up on what I think are flaws :rolling laughter:

You just run a series of teasers behing the boat no hooks just teasers which can be skirted lures by the way.
The one huge advantage of fishing out of a flybridge gameboat is your vision, you get to see alot more than if standing on the boats deck area.
So when you see the marlins chasing the teaser you start winding them in drawing the billfish into your transom area that's when the fly rod goes out.
Personally think it's a waste of time cause unless you actually see the marlins you'll miss out & alot of marlin strikes are blind strikes where you don't get to see the fish approach the lure pattern.

i reckon the schooling fish and what lurks under them would be well worth a go, i was chatin with a mate last night that reckons red and white feathered patterns around the rocks will get u a good mixed bag. all sub surface fishing though. it would be nice to crack a popper infront of a big kingy though
maybe admin needs to add a FLY SECTION
