Lads, went out yesterday (joys of being a public servant) and put in at Clontarf. Tried to berley some yakkas at the marina to no avail. Bait fished around Fisher Bay near the Spit for the massive snapper (attached), and that other yoke - is that a cuttlefish?
Headed up to Seaforth Bluff and was rigging the third rod when the first one went off. And off it went, Siennna 2500 squealing like a pig. Tightened up drag full but it still pulled. Battled a few minutes before getting busted off (at the hook). Think it was a big big king (on a strip of fresh squid)? Went a bit quiet so headed up to Pickering Point. Caught some more small snapper, before hooking a monster flathead (again on the light rod). Pulled him up to the surface and tried to net him. But could see the inevitable happening. Arsed around with the net, and after a few headshakes off he went.
Pity I didn't have a 3rd arm to take a photo. He was at least 5 and a half metres long and a metre wide at the head.

Hey sean, that yoke would be an octopus, which are fairly common at times around the bays/estuaries of sydney harbour & botany bay...caught some big specimens around the wharves in the harbour. Unlucky on the flathead, its heartbreaking to see large fish lost at the final stages when it probably looked like you had a half chance to win the battle.

hey nice report! hey i jsut caught one of those octapus today, it was a big one, i had to lock my drag and was using 30lb braid 10kg rod to reel it in, felt so heavy. I kept it for kingy bait, not sure if they'll work as well as squid anyone know?
