Dave go visit Ben @ Windsor Bait n Tackle, he will get you sorted with something to do the job! If your reel is still ok just get a half decent rod and later get a reel!

Hey david welcome to the site mate, just so it does not sound bad, maybe a little introduction of yourself would be a great way to start your first post.
David how much do you want to spend ? , what type of fishing will you be using it for ?

Enjoy the site heaps to learn.:smoking33:

Welcome to the site, a bit more info on the rod you had? Is it beach rod, boat rod? What did you used to catch with it?

I would suggest a 8ft 3-5kilo rod, maybe 5-8kg if the line you are using is bigger than 10lb. Most of my little fish have come from my cheap bait rod, whole setup worth $40 and has caught that many fish its seriously not funny!
All the best with your future fishing.

Yeah iv caught plenty of small bream with this rod, the photo thats my dp has a bream in it, i was told that you wouldnt get too much bigger than that, it was a struggle tho.
What would you guys rekon would be the best bait for bream?
I might head down to LaParouse on the weekend, nt sure wht i will catch there though, or what bait to use down there.

The are many baits in my opinion for Bream some are dough home made, pizza crust, pilly fillets, cheese cubes, steak cubed, mince. They are scavengers and will eat most stuff.

hrmm i think i have some squid in the freezer, will most likely try that out first see how it goes. i might try some dough aswel, i heard with dough u can add a bright food colour to it to attract the fish.

Dave keep an eye on the discount bins at bait'n'tackle shops, I'v picked up some good gear at real bargain prices....Mind you bought my son a $40 Bart Simpson fishing rod two X-Mases ago he recently caught a rather large stingray on it and has caught plenty of legal fish on that rod.

my advice would be go to a local tackle shop and tell them what your after and your price range and get a decent combo for around $50-$70......dont go to cheap otherwise you will regret buying a $25 combo...save a few $$$$ and get something half decent.......

good luck mate and remember you can fish for the rest of your life so u dont need your combo yesterday...:luck:

i learnt the hard way by buying cheaper shi7 and then realising it when its to late......its better to buy 1 good combo then 2 crap combos........

Wayno's pretty correct there....

Mate in bargain bins over the last year I'v scored....a 6'6" light rod for my daughter and a 15kg Silstar blue water roller tip rod...Both were a little marked but in perfect working order and cost round $20 each!

Seriously go have a chat to Ben tell him what your after and how much you want to spend, he's a top bloke and you could always consider a layby. If I still had some spare rods and reels I would just give you one but now the family have developed an interest in fishing all are accounted for!

Another alternative is to have a look at places like Big W or K-Mart, bout 4yrs ago I picked up a cheap Penn outfit that has copped an absolute hammering and still runs fine only cost round $60 for rod and reel!

Go to Big W mate and get yourself an ET combo for $73 dollars .. they are on special, from $100

7' graphite spin stick and Shimano Alivio 2500 size.

Cheaper for solid tip rod combos, if that is your liking.

My mate got one and he loves it hahaha

starting fisherman....go glass not graphite, to easy to break when not taking very good care. Also Glass is cheaper. Ugly stick is cheap and pretty much indestructible

Thanks guys i will have a look at the Big W/Kmart varities, also, what exactly is the differene between the graphite and the glass?

graphite

usually costs more
more sensitive
lighter
more brittle (won't take hard knocks as well as glass/fibreglass/solid tip)
not a must but best if flicking lures
better for flicking light weights due to, usually faster taper

fibreglass

lasts forever
usually heavier
stronger i.e. HARDER to break either from inexperience or slammed car doors
i think better for bait fishing
casts weights better/further

It's really up to you mate, I would not say get fibreglass because you are a beginner. If you look after your 5hit and you are a keen fisho, go graphite. if you are gonna chuck your rod in your ute and not take care of it, go glass.

You will have a lot more fun with a graphite rod and at the end of the day, is a better investment.
