View Full Version : Kyeemah 11/05/06
Hi guys,
Took a mate fishing on Thursday evening, 5:30-8pm.
Told him about the success i was having with the SP's so he wanted to have a go.
We caught 5 Tailor, 3 keepers 33-38cm and two Trevally 30 & 35cm.
The Bait fisherman nearby were catching small bream only.
I hooked something early that busted me off along the rocks as he darted along the breakwater quicker than i could run with him. Possibly a big bream...as i have seen a few big ones come out of there lately.
Best patterns were Clear or Clear-Red.
Unfortunately my photo's are too big to upload. I will try work out a way to make them smaller or something.
Cheers
Ed

Hey FrgdEd, i know the brighton area well, where abouts where you fishing ?
Jase,
Kyeemah inlet of course.....you're the one who kept saying it was ok down there and after a few recent trips i tend to agree.
I have had most success Northside, within 100m of the bridge.
If you are ever there, i am the guy flicking SP's, wearing a pale cap with a Shamrock, and a light brown "utility belt".
You will usually see me around sunset on weekdays if the wind is not too strong.

Hye Ed- As I have never used lures before- are you able to take a picture of the SP's for me??
What weight length brand do you use?? With so many on the market - I wouldnt have a clue what to buy, then walk away scratching my head.:(
Hi Disco,
I took some pics of my current collection of SP's. Pics/resolution is not so good. Once again too big. I will send them to you.
In summary: I use mostly 3 inch Berkely Power minnows. I also have squidgies and some no-name models (uncented).
Patterns:
Pink Lemonade
Pumpkinseed
Smelt
Vampire
blue pearl
Silver fox Fish
bloodworm
Goldeneye Fish
Watermelon
Different pattern in different locations, weather etc. Essentially they all CAN work under the right conditions, so i think its good to have a good variety.
I generally use 1/4 oz jighead with hook size 2-1/0. This tends to catch me most.
If i am targeting bream specifically, i might use a1/8 or 3/16 oz jighead, size 2-4 hook, and 2 inch plastics. I find bream the hardest to catch on plastics, particularly when land based.
Hope this helps.

Hi guys,
Best patterns were Clear or Clear-Red.

hi mate, im new to SP
s and im looking to pick up maybe 4 packets of SPs.. are there 'top 4' colours and types that you would recommend and what size jig head would recommend for kyeemagh?
also how do you fish that area? keep walking up and down and casting and retrieving (slow? fast?)
i've consistently tried fishing there with fresh prawn and all I got were small bream/snapper/flathead all around 10-15cm... :( and also i see most bait fishermen put huge sinkers on and just fling them out at the end of the rocks, but when i use light tackle the current just blows my line away... that type of fishing doesnt really appeal to me...
Cheers
Rich
Hi Rich,
Sorry in delay in reply.:**** happens:
Okay, to answer your questions;
1. I've been told that all SP's CAN work with the right conditions and techniques.......but that being said....My choice initially would be stick to the Berkely range. Below are my favourites.
TYPES;
GULP: Sandworms (6in) in Natural or Camo, and Minnow Grubs (2-3in) in Green or Brown Pumpkinseed.
Power Minnows: 3 inch Varieties in :Watermelon/Pumpkinseed, Blue Pearl, Smelt, Bloodworm and Pink Lemonade.
Many people like Hawg's/Nymphs (Insect imitations) but i have limited success on them....depends where/how you fish i suppose.
JigHead: I usually use 1/16oz, 2gram,3gram or 1/8oz, depending on wind and current (PS .Try get wind behind you!), and hook size 4-1/0, depending on Target species. I might use a 1/4oz-3/0 and 4inch SP if specifically chasing Flathead.
You may also consider using Flourocarbon trace. 5 foot or so of 6lb my choice. Expensive stuff but worth it i think.
I don't walk up and down too much....too lazy! I pick my spot, and bash it for a good 1/2 hour, covering as much area as possible (Hard sometimes when there are many fishers), then if nothing, pick another spot nearby, and do same again.
Technique is something you will learn and I am certainly no expert! There are many DVD's dedicated to the issue - check 'em out. Different fish, respond to different things and inhabit different levels of the water. My Experience: Slow with "twitching" is probably best for most bottom feeders like Bream, and stop/start jerky is good for Tailor and Trevally, fast is good for Salmon.
Kyeemah:
I have seen successful bait fishing there, but is either on Float with Bread on Calm days, or big sinkers cast right into the middle, usual catches are Bream and Trevally, occasional Blackfish.
On SP's you'll catch mainly Trevally, Tailor, Bream and the very occasional Salmon or Kingfish.
Hope this helps,
And Good luck.
