I was thinking I might lead a 4wd weekend for anyone interested later in the year?? It will be a good chance to find some remote fishing spots and to see a few places most Australians are to lazy to explore.
all you will need is your own camping/cooking gear and a 4WD, not a recreation vehichle like a forrester, CRV, or extrail etc.
So, who of you have a fourbies and want to do some bush bashin in say Oct this year??
As per usual I have a spare seat or two and Im sure others will to but lets just hear interest from those with 4WD's first.

I dont have alot of info as It is only a fresh idea. I was thinking leave fri come home sun type of thing?? No ferral vehichle destroying tuff guy stuff. Just some well chosen locations and some good off roading with a camp and a fish along the way.
We can go west from the genolan caves and cross the cowmung river (there is some trout and native fishing out there) then make our way out to yerranderie (ghost town) the onto hill end then home??
Any suggestions would be welcome, though I could taylor a complete trip and anyone who wants to joins is welcome what would be better?

BF sounds pretty tempting, haven't roughed it for a bit and nothings better than a weekend away with the boys but even better than that is knowing the knowledge you have of those out of the way spots....
Count me in at this stage BF, don't think the commodore would handle the rough stuff too well so if a spare seat was to be available and I can get a leave pass I would be keen! Any idea of a date at this stage, would possibly make it easier to get it locked in mate!:headbang:

Oct is the only date I can really aim for right now, though I will be more serious once a few people show some interest. Possibly oct long weekend?? Though im not sure travelling on long weekends is the best as you have to try EXTRA hard to get away from people.

Does it have a live Axel or independant rear?? Does it have low range gearing??
A standard fixed axel and good low gearing, with some decent ground clearence is all you should need. Independant suspension is asking for trouble and plenty of chasis banging.

sounds great. ive got the 4wd and gear to be comfy. I love doing this stuff.
Never fished the fresh before and ive always wanted to try it, and it sounds like you know that neck of the woods Flicker.
The problem is that its my sisters birthday that weekend, and its also NRL Grand Final weekend. (Il never forgive my mother for giving birth to my sis on that weekend - couldnt she wait a week:banghead: :banghead: )
If theres good numbers in for it i may make a sacrifice.

Mate thats the sort of egar response Im looking for:ohhh yeah: ! At this date nothing is set in stone so a date is up for discussion. Im not really that familiar with that much out of the Hawkesbury district. Though i did do a fair bit of bush bashing out that way with Dad when I was younger. im just getting to know these places again for myself for fishing purposes!!!

I love going for a bush bash. I go travelling with the missus alot and we always make a point of going off road to places that are untouched and deserted.
Hopefully we can get some more interest going along with some ideas so we can make it happen.

What area ya thinking of BF?
Abercrombie has some good tracks?
Yalwal has some Harder stuff..
Also some hrder stuff around lithgow.
What about Bendethra? Can do from Moruya to Cooma?
Dunno what BF has in mind but if you dont got low range id say FORGET IT... Inderpendant front suspension can be nursed though most stuff if you take it easy andpick good lines.

Awsome reply this is the type of input I have been looking for. Bendethra is crowded, moruya to Cooma is a little drab, though Yalwal sounds good any fishing there?? and the back of Batemans sounds magic. Esspecially if there is bass out there.
You sound like a valuable member of the team MPH:beerchug:

Oh DC... your just jelous cause your datsun wont make it there!!
Umm, The back of batemans and around shallow crossing there are alot of tracks.. They go all through the area. Ive only explorered a few of them and the BASTARDS receltly dozed in the corn trail track.. through misty mountain!
Most of bendethra is just slow fire trail stuff....
Yalwal has some good tracks and there are also bass in the dam at yalwal, although im not sure how many are caught, But coolendel is another option and has good bass fishing and is not far from the 4x4 tracks.. Its been a while since ive been there so im not sure how difficult they are?
Personally, I like tracks to be rocky and damaging, but there is usually an easy way around!

yalwal and coolendel seem pretty popular. Ive just looked em up on the net. I think something west of lithgow is in order as it is not that popular with the general public. Let me get the topo maps out and have a scout!
Im very exited about the keen response :ohhh yeah:

The best roasts come outta the camp ovens...
Throw it all in and let it cook...
Marice, Id reccomend next time you cook in one, dont put it on the fire as in the pic, sit it away from the fire and put coals around it and on the lid.
I generally use a cake tray in the bottom for the meat and throw the veggies all around it, with wither a small amount of oil or a cupfull of port (or red wine) Dont be afraid to try differant things and dont try to cook it to quickly...
A Chicken with a beer can up its Clacka is another favourite!!
Bass flicker
05-04-08, 09:17 PM
I was cooking a rogan josh curry made with traditional spices, not the bottled stuff.
I agree with MPH the coals surrounding and on the lid are a great way to cook and gauge temp!

Seeing all this natural bush stuff has got me excited....BF or Maurice, can I book a seat in one of your 4by's....will just have to make this trip It is one I really don't want to miss........Should have my boat ready by then....wondering if it would make it std or possibly fit some offroad springs so we can have a tinnie to get out on! Anyone else taking theirs?

I was thinking of scrambling around in some little streams/creeks. Ive never been 4wd'ing anywhere decent you could float a tinnie.
Forget the boat Jase you know how to scrub fish, that little red headed ferret taught you all about it:rolling laughter:

I own one of the BEST 4wd's ever to drive the aussie bush. its a 1985 110 landrover(defender body) with a 3.9L 4cl isuzu insanly torqy engine , the vehichle is rated to pull 4500kgs. It has coil over susp all round and will eat any stock patrol or landcruiser for breakieHott
Lets not start a mud slinging match on each others rides hey.

Im a Toyota Hilux man.
I havnt driven a Landrover so i cant knock them. But ive put my 97 duel cab Hilux through hell and back and she hasnt complained once.
2 years back me and the missus went all the way to The Cape and back. 10 500 km in 5 weeks. Through rivers, over mountains, the Hilux did it all.
I love the thing but ive been saying for over a year now that i have to sell it to get something bigger cause shes only a 2.4 L. Its taken me more than a year cause its hard to put her up for sale seen how good shes been to me.I towed 750 kg of boat back from QLD in November last year and she seemed to love it. But i do want to put her to stud and buy another Hilux around the 3.0L range.
If i could buy the same 97 model as new i wouldnt think twice about it.
Ive been told that after the 97 models they are configured more of road vehicle than an off roader.
