Alls looking good now, trailer is welded(cheers Mick + Dad) sprayed it with gal paint after a good clean-up this week....all sized up and boat sits real nice on my home made skids and new rollers......Not too much progress on hull apart from a bit of paint and some repairs to some un-needed holes that were used for aux motor and rod holders..... but my fish finder -am collecting it today....2nd hand Apelco 460 with speed and temp-bought it for a song so very happy and its much more than I would've gotten feature and quality wise if I had bought new:ohhh yeah: .....Expect to be on the water in her towards the middle/end of winter!:ohhh yeah:

2nd hand Apelco 460 with speed and temp

I have one of those in mine jas. It come with the boat.

I found it hard to work until i found the manual on the raymarine website. I printed it out and sat in the boat for hours pressing buttons.

Now i'm more than happy. It has a lot of features and everything works on mine very well.

Enjoy mateHott

i still have a tinny and i think i always well some how .. i like how easy they are too look after and cheap too run ... plus you can almost go anywhere with them :hellyeah:

yea maurice i have them seats ( well the bigger ones ) and there great would not live without them .... on nice days when its hot you go and sit on them and its nice there not too warm not too hot not too cold

jason what hp motor are you looking at getting

storms72
05-04-08, 10:01 PM
Wes the Black Truck already sorted me out with a pair of swivel seats and a pair of thwart cushions so seating is fully sorted.....Will spend tomorrow cutting the seats so tackle trays X 4 are accessible from the rear and front seats in the boat(am just gonna cut holes so the trays can be removed from either end!).....Heaps happy with the finder...only $100 and in perfect condition and the owner threw in some shielded power cable....

Cheers Bees, I used to sell these a few years ago so will just have to remember what to do when and all will be good!

Engine will end up being a 30hp merc tiller....spoken to a few guys in the know and they recommend that size in a 2st for the hull and with the weight I will be carrying-family and I and gear in calm water....Outside will be perfect for myself + 1.......

Photos....Everyone keeps asking and I still havent posted any, might get to it soon might not....either way I'm enjoying this re-build and reguardless of the knockers(or should I say narrow minded fool) who tried to say I needed deep pockets my total budget on the boat is around $500 and the trailer is now ready for rego, have purchased the paint for the hull, all hardware has been purchased, fish finder is ready to be installed just need battery's and outboard and the time to get everything fitted.:ohhh yeah:

storms72
06-04-08, 03:42 PM
Love this no more daylight savings thing....had a couple of spare hours today so a little more progress today....Seats in, sounder fitted-cables run! And some photo's....:1yikes:

In fish finder shot little white cap is the screw on cap from a toothpaste tube-the screw on attachment for the power cable was missing when I picked up the sounder so a bit of fiddling, some crimp plugs, knead-it epoxy resin, stanley knife and a little brain work and I'v got a perfect watertight lead fitting....Happy days!

Great stuff stormy,I like that you've done it from the ground up so to speak. That is a very rough hull you began with and the pics give a brilliant idea of the finished job!:headbang:

storms72
06-04-08, 04:16 PM
Kingy, you should've seen the trailer.....think I might have some shots somewhere but it was in pretty bad nick now it looks like new and apart from HSV's dad's welding skills I have done the rest myself...

The hull is a great one to work on, very tough and its laid out well just wish there was more hours in the day to get more done!

06-04-08, 04:35 PM
it looks good jas its comeing together nice remember that fibriglass one i
fixed up it was tops when finished it owed me maybe $2500 all done
that was brand new steering ,new transom ,new trottle cables new cotrol box and what ever else and $500 service and the starting price $700
when finished my brother (who i done it for )thought $2500 was to much
so i sold it for $4000 ha ha he is kicking him self

jas trailor looks great .... almost new ... well doen to micks and his dads welding skills .... the hull is coming up good there a tough hull the older brookers ... and after doing some research i found out that yes the 30 hp mercury would be better for you as it as more gunt then most other bands and would be better to get your hull on the plane .... well done and good on ya keep the piccies coming

storms72
06-04-08, 06:21 PM
Quinnie a 30hp is a 30hp as far as I know, i'm getting a merc cause I can get one direct from merc through my best mates dad at a great price....He's also the one who said the 30 would be perfect after he spoke to a couple guys he knows in the industry....Personally I would prefer a yammi but @ the price I'm getting a merc for can't let personal choice influence my decision!:headbang:

Yeah BC, its coming along...been tossing up on outer hull colour for weeks and finally purchased some light grey....the inside will be the same blue as the bow and seats will stay green as they are-my girls chose the colours so I'm cool with it....anything to get us all out on the water together!

Didn't get around to the tackle tray storage but did mark it out this arvo and will have 4 trays accessible from the front or rear seats located in the centre seat! Other bits to do to make her comfortable yet functional!

Hoping to get out for the end of winter....Yes Wayno I will be on the lookout for icebergs!:rolling laughter:

10-04-08, 06:11 PM
Early finish from work today so a bit more progress....

Sanded back and primed the sides of my boat....It's good to finally have some good weather and even better to see the boat taking shape!
Will be away this weekend so nothing will be done till next week sometime..... after working the last-(I don't remember how many weekends a row) and will be going fishing with a good mate up the coast ....Hopefully I will finally be able to post a report on a successful fishing trip:rolling laughter: -either way just stoked to be able to get away and relax and fish!:headbang:

Getting closer, first coat of paint on the outer hull this arvo....Love the look of Shags boat so much Hot Pink was the choice:rolling laughter:  almost!

Looks good now its nice and shiny, hope to get the painting done by the end of this weekend and will post some pics up then.....Was going to use a brush to apply the paint but spoke to old mate at fibreglass supplies shop and went with the roller he recommended, paint has gone on really even and looking great!:ohhh yeah:

storms72
16-04-08, 07:29 PM
Thanks Moses, thats a real kind offer:beerchug: ...Only thing is the trailer although now road worthy is not yet registered, will be waiting to get all rego's done when I'v got a motor on the back of her! In a few years I may just take you up on the offer!

The paint I'v applied so far is looking real good, sprayed on the etch primer(3 spray cans was more than enough for the inner and outer sides of the hull and the trailer) and have rolled on the first coat of paint and it spread really well, no thick spots and is looking great-only purchased a 1lt tin and have used about a third of the tin so it will almost be enough to finish the job. Was going to put a first coat on the unside and a second on the outer hull this arvo but the weather wasn't the best for paint to dry.

Moses What would you recommend to toughen things up a bit as a final coat so I dont chip it too quickly with anchor and chain and when tying up to wharves...I was thinking of a coat or two of clear....whats your thoughts?

Bees Knees
16-04-08, 08:00 PM
Clear is still paint Jas. Might as well put extra coats of the paint you have there.:ohhh yeah:

storms72
16-04-08, 08:44 PM
Yeah Beez, I know clear is paint, what I have will be enough to just about finish the job with 2 coats all round, just wondering if theres anything else that would be harder wearing than just putting on more coats of whats already been applied....

Am really just asking what Moses would recommend as I expect he would have a fair bit of know how as far as painting goes!

Yet again thanks Moses...I'm a bit too far gone to turn back now and again thanks for the offer and next time it needs paint I will give you a yell...I did give the primer a very light sand prior to applying the first coat to be sure it was as smooth as I could get it....Yeah its not perfect but for myself and the family I'm more than happy with how it is coming up! Mind you the crowns sound good and just for the offer if you'd like I would like to offer you a fish from her once its ready!

Hey jason, i recently got a blue slip for the trailer.
here what he wanted.
---He told me to write a seteutary decleration (what ever the spelling) saying that i have own the trailer for more than 10 years and the trailer was home made.
--- He didnt wanted to see any rust. he told me just paint it if i want, as long as he doesnt see any rust.
---- No movement with the wheels, i mean the hubs, they must be good.
---- lights and reflectors for both side.
---- Have to have a weigh in ticket.

I made them ready. Went to his place, he stamped some numbers on the trailer. filled the form, there you go.

clear cot wont last in salt water what coulour are u going to paint it?
i would reccomend a marine grade 2pak and stick to a plain colour like a white or a blue. marine grade 2pak is thicker and is designed to last in the saltwater.i sprayed a mates boat with it 7 years ago and it is still fine just alot harder to apply. pm me for any more Qs

Thanks to the guys who have provided help with my little project.....CC, BC for the boat, Pez for some good advice, DC-yeah I used etch primer on it prior to first coat-cheers, Moses for the kind offer and others for their kind words of encouragement.........:beerchug:

Looking good there storms, quick Q are you going to paint the inside deck?(i see the sides are painted) I did on my tinny (when rebuilt) and was great two reasons stopped glare off the hull thus reduced sunburn from the boat and 2 finishes off the boat. Appart from that it looks great. I wish i took progress pics when i rebuilt my 12foot Clark Cutter ....13 cotes of paint (from etch primer to top cote) engine service, trailer rebuild and bot fit out all done by me at home. Quite a task

did you say a 35hp????? hang onto your wig mate. Sounds a bit big for that hull???

PEZ.

Pez we used to run a 50hp on it before storms bought it. At full speed If you opened your mouth it would blow a hole out your pants.

A 35hp or 25hp would be perfect for it i reckon. 50hp was a b it over the top.

storms72
05-05-08, 06:39 PM
Pez I got the 35 from Frank and he's used it on his tinny which I think is a little smaller and definately lighter than mine so I think it will be fine....Was suprised with the weight as I can carry it without straining but as I'm not fussed bout hauling it on and off after every trip out I'v bolted it on!

Pirate, I'm not going to paint the inner floor as I will be putting some marine carpet or rubber matting down once I find the stuff I'm looking for! Gotta agree with the big task call, its taken a while but its definately worth it!

Agreed Maurice....Seen plenty of small boats with bigger engines on them..Was speaking to BC last night and was reliving my young years when my parents had their Quintrex fishabout which had a 35 evinrude on the back and it got along great with our family on board(3 kids and mum'n'dad). I don't think it will break and speed records but will get along just fine for family and I!:hellyeah:

Still can't believe the boat I was on today is the same one I purchased in January----Have done a quick calculation of all expenses to date including boat/trailer/outboard/all fittings/paint/nuts,bolts,screws/sounder/anchor's and rope/rego's....I'v got my boat on the water for under $1500.00....I have been very fortunate to have had some great people provide many bits needed at very good prices.

18-05-08, 07:49 AM
It doesn't get much better for $1500, is this your 1st boat Storms?
Don't forget all the safety requirements.
I know it's early days but it looks a little bow up at the moment.
Where do you think your main fishing will be done?

well done that is superb by the look of the wake see goes allright

storms72

Fed that shot was taken as she was climbing over the hump but once going it sits very flat on the water-very little bow lift from standstill to planing...I had a little fiddle with the manual trim adjustment and I think it is right for calm conditions but once I get it into a little rougher water I will adjust it up a notch to get the bow up a little. Most of my fishing will be done around Botany Bay and when conditions allow down south from Wollongong to Nowra.

Its my third boat-previously owned a 8ft glass boat with a 2 then a 6hp on it.....My parents owned a similar hull to mine-Quinnie fishabout 15ft when I was very young....Later they had a 15ft trimcraft tinny which I re-powered with a 15hp...used to take this boat from our house at Point Clare on the central coast-near west gosford maccas, out the brisbane waters-the rip-box head to Loin island and along the coast as far as Forresters beach to fish/surf with a couple of mates in tow! Have driven IRB's for local surf clubs and raced Jet-Skii's so have enough knowledge to get me by but always open to suggestions if someone sees I could do better with the set-up!

As far as safety goes I worked in a Yamaha marine dealership for a few years and as I will have my wife and children on board safety is paramount to me.

Guys for $1500 we as a family are happy as, didn't have to stretch the budget too far...Mind you as I previously mentioned I have been very lucky with the help I have recieved from people here...Budget couldve easily blown out to $3,000 + without the great guys who have put their hands up and helped!

No further mod's yet but first fishing trip out was great-only 1 keeper but the engine went great, plenty of room for my gear.....Existing rod holders work great-had 4 out most of the time with different baits on them! Speed reading from sounder was around 22kts-41kmph....My car navman gave a reading of 43kmph....Not too bad from a 76 model engine.....

Will be heading out this weekend with the family for a cruise/picnic/fish down south at either Greenwell Point or on the Shoalhaven somewhere. Will be good to see how she goes with my Wife, 3 children and myself on board with all the gear!
