It is my melancholy duty to inform you that John Bethune has been diagnosed with cancer and is due to undergo surgery later in the year.
Dean Hayes is organizing a testimonial dinner/fishing competition (still working on the concept) on the 19/20 August weekend. I am sure you will all join me in wishing John the best and would assist Dean in anyway we can to support his efforts to help John. At this stage the event will be at Walkers Beach but its form is still being worked on. Please keep this weekend free as I am sure that whatever is organized will be informative and well worth attending.
Please feel free to pass this as widely as you can, John is aware of what’s happening. I will keep you informed when details come to hand.

That is shocking news. I've had the fortune to listen to John speak at a couple of fishing semenars and being from the Hawkesbury ran into him on the water on a few occasions. He is truley a great source of wisdom and I hope that he fights this struggle as well as he does BIG bass!!

Put me down for a ticket! And I'll adjust the nsw pro flathead calendar that i'm working on at the moment to make sure it's free. I'll put the news and the date on our nswptf website ae well - mind you, we are not gathering to bury Ceasar, but to encourage the old bugger (and one of nature's gentlemen, but still an old bugger) into remission!

From JB
"I hesitated to write this note, as I have had and continue to have a flood of mixed feelings. “Friends” and “Mates” – two words that at times we all tend to use lightly and without a lot of thought. Then when something dramatic happens in one’s life – true friends always come to the fore. And boy! In my case, haven’t they ever.
I feel at once humble, proud and most of all immensely moved by what I have read and heard.
What a bloody great mob of mates I have. From the very bottom of our hearts Maureen, the family and I thank you one and all.
And rest assured, that I won’t give in to this rotten disease.
Thanks Mates
John Bethune"
