G'day guys,
new to the forum, do my fishing outside and river/lake/esturie.
Im looking at buying my 1st overhread reel, will be using it for dollies, kings, maybe tuna. Im thinking tiagra TI20a or TI30a to fish with15kg, looking to hear all things good and bad about them. Mainly are they worth the money?
Thanks, look forward to reading replies.
i think for dollies it is overkill but would be ideal i would look at maybe a accurate if thats the money bracket very small and very powerful:luck:

Yeah i know a TI30 is overkill just for dollies but its not only going to be used for dollies, i only want to buy 1 so i want it to be a bit of an all-rounder.

Why not something like a TLD 50 2speed?

excuse my ignorance, but is there any reason other than price you would suggest a TLD rather than a tiagra

Think the T120a is a bit of a toy to spool up with 15kg line.
Line Capacity:
650m of 10kg
450m of 15kg
Honestly it is beyond me why these reel manufactureres would even include such capacities stamped on the reels.
Grant it there's prob more than enough line capacity for your toy fish like the Mahi's & Kungy's.
But when you start fushing for your more serious species like YFT /Marlins etc those fish will blow you away & you'll be spooled in no time cause you just dont have enough line capacity.
For those who just dont get it !
The less line capacity the quicker it leaves your spool & once it starts getting down low your spool has to rotate that much quicker to keep up with the fishy's run add to that equation very few people would stop to think of backing off their drags to allow for water pressure on the line & you've just lost your wittle fishy.
I'm a firm believer of line capacity & to give you an idea I'm using a Pemm 50 W & a Tiagra 50 W on my 15 kg sticks.
50's would be ok as aell but I wouldn't use anything smaller, you'll get a whle heap of peeps telling you it's ok to go smaller & that they've caught heaps of fish on their smaller gear.
You can also listen to them but ask them how many times they've been smoked by a decent sized fish & lost it due to inadequte tackle.
Anyone can catch those rat YFT's which frequent our waters these daysI'm refering to fishy's around the 30 kg mark but when that what seems to be rare these days good freight train comes through you'll get smoked.

Same capacity with 20lb heavier line, cheaper also so you can spend more on your stick

thanks for the tips mate, just curious, was that ment to say 30's would be ok aswell, because i think the TI30 will be good, any bigger would be just too big and heavy for what i want to do with it.
What do you prefer the penn or the tiagra?

Ive got a Tiagra 20 , Got 700m of 10kg Mono on it.. Has not been used much but hoping to get onto some of the RATS (as DC calls them) This winter.. Got it on a Backbone Elite 15kg Fully Rollered rod which i think is more a 10-15kg anyway!
The 30LRS is a great reel, light and compact and drag pressure to boot, ideally suited to 15kg line but 24kg can be fished off it, it is overkill on Dolly's, but will handle Tuna and Marlin to some extent, namely size of the fish.
Alot of people think they have one reel that can catch a Marlin or Tuna, the thing is it will do on its own if you find a bait ball and put out a live bait, but trolling with one lure will not do that much!
For the money honeslty, for off Sydney, i would buy 3 TLD 25's for the same price as one Tiagra. Much better value if you ask me, they will handle most fish off Sydney fishing 15kg line, its only the big Blues that may worry you if you hook one, but mostly you would run 24kg and up in close to the boat so that will help with these beasts.
Anyway just my thought, all the best with it.

Well that's what I told Spud in regards to his tiagra 20

Ummmmm ! my Fin Nor :devil-smiley: :devil-smiley:
That's what you call a reel & not because it has a high price tag either.
Prob because I've been into gamefishing for many moons now I get a bit choosy as to my tackle.
I just built up a new set of sticks solely to troll with & was looking @ a new reel for one of the 24 kg sticks.
And I'm thinking along the lines of getting a Everol again after all these years simply because it's similar in appearance / design to the Fin Nor.
Now the prob with your Tiagra's/Penn Internationals is that they grow the reel outwards esp in their W range.
The Fin Nors & Everols grow the spool/body upwards making them a narrower reel & that's my personal preference.
See with the wider reels you tend to force the whole outfit L - R & it dosen't feel right when you're fighting a fishy whereas with the narrower more upright reels you get a smoother wind when retrieving line.
Like I said thats my preference but if I had to choose between a Tiagra & International ????
Think I'd go the Tiagra I dont think the Inter's hold up as good with the corrosion factor , one mark on a Inter & the corrosion comes through prob the grade of alloy or a not as good job done with anodizing.
Here's a looky @ the new waterproof Everols

If i can pull in a couple of 30kg Tuna with my 20 Ill be happy.. If somthing steals 700m of 10kg Line of my Tiagra Ill also be happy!!!
I still think its gonna be fun...
But like DC said... Ya might as well get the right reel from the start.. If i had my choice again id buy a differant reel, but ive got it and im gonna use it!
If i get smoked!!! Well, comon, who here wouldnt be all smiles watching 700m of line spin of a reel... would be a rush either way!
