OK. Its finally happening. Me and a mate are pooling in to buy a second hand boat. Just had a look on the trading post and we could pick up something decent for around 5 K's. Having not owned a boat before and not really having experience in boats, I have heaps of questions. Ill start of with the ones on my mine first.
1. Aluminum or fiberglass? (pro's & con's)
2.What car will be able to pull it? Someone told me you need a 6 cylinder to pull it. Is this true?

for a first boat, a good one would be a small 12 - 14ft alumium tinny, with a nice 15 - 30 hp,
i might be buying this quintrex estuary angler, got too do a revs check on it, and if o.k, should be in the shed
What size boat? Fishing inside or do you want to go outside as well? I tow a 5m quintrex with a 2.5 4 cylinder wagon.
I have a 4.2m Quintrex for sale on this forum, with a 40hp outboard. Selling for basically the motor price. Have a look, if it will suit your needs.

for a first boat I think that might be a winner.
Leaves you with plenty of options and is cheap to find out what you want for a second boat :-)

yeah tell us about your fishing style, area,if its your fist boat tinnies are very rowbust for example when i was new to boating i was driving up a river witch had a low bridge very old with big timber posts holding it up
anyway when i came through i pulled back on the throtle and turned the steering wheel a touch to correct my line
anyway to fast and to sharp a turn and bang i got the pole i was glad i was in a tinnie just a scratch
my advice mate would be, spend as much as possible on the engine, if it gives you constant trouble you won't enjoy it, and you will be broke. Find a good cheap hull that will serve your purposes maybe without an engine and fit a new one yourself.
I found my hull 4.5m quinny on a guys front lawn on the central coast, offered him $700 for it and off I drove. It wasn't even for sale.
Put a brand new 30hp Tohatsu 2 stroke on it for $2,500 2yrs ago and haven't had a minutes trouble.

aluminum, its lighter, but it gives a roughter ride, and it holds it vaule pretty good,
fiberglass, its heavier, but gives a smotther ride, but loses it vaule pretty quick, i hve seen some half cabins for around 400 bucks, witha motor
goodluck
