Well we made the trip tp Browns thru a bit of slop in the morning but nothing too drastic, arrived at the shelf and put some Bibless Minnows out and 2 Jet heads, after driving thru a cube trail just North of Browns, i know my bad, Shotgun went off and i thought it was a Stripey due to the cold 18deg water, but to our surprise it was a small Fin of 8kg:congrats:. Good start we thought. Kept trolling for a while and tried to find some change in water temp but to no avail.
We set up a cube trail just South East of Browns but nothing after 2hrs, we mad the decision to go to one of DC's marks, should have gone there from the start! After arriving and hearing positive stories on the radio we set up a cube trail and within 10min we had Fin behind the boat, Alex hooked up and had a 12kg in the boat within 1min! Short work on 24kg. I told him to give a Jig a go, and to his surprise on the first drop he hooked up only to have the hooks pull boatside.
We kept on cubing but i believe we cubed too much, i overfed them in my opinion. They started thinning out and it was getting dark when my Penn lets out a growl, i set the hook and push it to strike, the reel screams, i tighten the drag to just near sunset, the fish took 150m in about 15sec's, then nothing, my line snapped, whether it was bad line or another fish swam thru it i'll never know but it was a good fish, damn good fish!:nopity:
Anyway the pillies started running out and we had to leave as it was getting dark soon. I later found out that the bite came on well into the night. Nevertheless it was a great day out there with truly awesome company.
Another funny thing happened as well, a little bird maybe a Tern? Clotheslined himself on our spread and got tangled:rolling laughter:, my GF loved playing with it for a while after we untangled it, such beatiful little things, it tried to bite her but she said it did not hurt, after a few photos we let the poor thing go.
Cant wait to get out there again soon!

Glad the little fella was OK, that was a Goulds Petrel, one of only 1200 or so left on the planet, nearly all of which breed on Cabbage Tree Is. and Boondelbah Is. off Port Stephens. Clever little buggers on the wing but not too bright. I've had a few land on the deck at night probably disoriented by deck lights. N.P.W.S. baby sit with them on the islands when they're breeding (the birds breeding not the staff).

Did you notice any crabs ??

Jen I'm refering in the YFT's stomachs not on Kamil :rolling laughter:

Cause there's been no baitfish about for the YFT to feed on last couple of months.

Every fish we've taken has had an empty stomach exept for the odd cubes but choka's with wittle crabs.

Think that's whats holding the fish to that area CRABS

I've got a .22 hornet !

It's a rip snorta as well, dual triggers but not much smoke comes out of the barrel.

Might have to shove a tiagra up there :rolling laughter:

On a serious note though spoke to a few boys who fushed on sunday, biggest they got was 26 kg but they had 15 fish on board by lunchtime.

They were on a mates 8 meter noosa cat he's a charter boat I'll catch up with him 2morro but think I know steve well enough to know where he was fushing.

Kamil you'll find all that talk about big blues is premature & you were wise not to call what you didn't see.

Bluefin have a limit as to how far nth they will travel & it looks like @ present they're staying sth.

However twice on sunday they had schools of largish YFT 50 keggers + come under the boat in full visual mode.

Being a charter & with most of the anglers hooked up they missed out on the larger fishy's.

Same boat fushed Browns on saturday for zilch skipper was wise enough not to go there again on sunday

Have a look @ AFMA website , It gives the updated core and buffer zones for the SBT fishery. At present the core zone nth boundary is at the 33S line and the buffer at 32S. These lines are moved in conjunction with the northward movement of the Tasman front and obviously the SBT moving with it. Therefore they're on ya doorstep, check the sstc's and surface height charts, find the breaks and if your legs are long enough there's some thumpers to be had. Good luck.

xtosea
04-07-08, 10:31 AM
Na, thats not true, i trolled south of them while they were cubing then iwe went North a bit for a few miles, then turned around and trolled past them one more time this time on the inside of them. Did not troll around them all the time at all, i would not do that.

Fishgowander, the SST's are looking really good about 6Nm East of Browns, you will get fish there for sure. Not many reports this week but thats because of the weather and no one has really been able to get out, but all signs look good. That's under the proviso that you travel in a straight line & dont get on the piss the night B4.

I pick my days, light westerly up your ar*e on way out will make smooth sailing for @ least 12 NM's

I cruised out on 25 knots yesterday without pushing the boat & winds are predicted lighter tommorro.

Mate your guess is as good as mine it changes over night disregard temp readings, if you find blue water that's where you want to fush .

Blue water may be in closer than the wide marks so dont think further out is better.

Reports I've been getting is that the fin are now on a squid diet instead of the crabs they've been eating so far this season, seems sauri's are still scarce.

You definately are missing something Kinky !

I'm not shy to allow others on my boat who haven't caught themselves a decent fish a chance to do so.

If you're questioning my ability to land fish like this wittle one then again you're gravely mistaken.

You can only dream of even catching an epsy of decent fish that I have caught includiong 90+ keggeres SOLO that means I was the only one on the boat.

I'm not about boasting about every wittle fishy that I catch esp those pathetic fishy's called kingfush which you seem to revel over.

When you've caught something of significance then & only then can you even comwe into my league.

I grant you that you have no idea of what I've caught so I'm being very generous & symphathetic in this reply.

To those interested in looking @ another pic of the wittle fishy this aint a bad one & gives a better idea of it's girth.

YFT dont grow much longer than this one they just start filling out, sickles are a very good indication of the fishy's weight & if the sickles on this fishy were another 6"'s longer you'd be looking @ the magic 100 kegger.

Good stuff DC and all those involved on the day.
I must admit to all that when i caught my first fin which was a 60 kg job a few weeks ago, it was actually DC's rod that went off and he screamed at me to get it.
I didnt want to cause it was his rod. Goes to show that he doesnt mind a young fella new to the scene bringing up the fish, as long as you listen and learn.
