Well high tide was at 5.00am and I had set my alarm for 03.30am. I worked shifts all my life so getting up at "daft o'clock" was not a problem, especially when it was for fishing. I stepped out onto the caravan veranda to check out the weather - it was still dark, foggy but there was very little wind and I could not here any sea movement. Luxury !!!!!

I drove from the Clash down to Terraly and cut over the Mull past the "boar field". I took my time as quite a few deer had been seen lately,in fact here is a shot I took of one last week when the wife and I were walking over to Logan.I am not sure who got the biggest fright!

I arrived at Port Logan car park at about 04.15 a and can you believe it? there were no other cars there.I headed south to a new mark my mate had suggested. I followed his directions and took ages to find the "rough track" he had mentioned. After a bit of a yomp got to his mark - I think!

As most of you know rock climbing/scrambling is my nemesis and these were not pleasant rock skeer in front of me!!!! I am sure you have all done this at new rock marks - taken the wrong route! I bet it took me 20 minutes to get the 50 yds to my chosen spot. It was not an easy spot to fish from either.Oh well thats rock fishing for you.

My mate said he had taken mackems from this spot so tackled up my spinning rod first. As I was tackling up "Sammy the seal" swam past no more than about 12' away - not a good omen I thought!!!! Well gave it about 30 casts, had no takes so put the rod to one side and tackled up my float rod.

Put on my faithful lug/limpet compo wrasse bait on a 1/0 and cast no more than 10' as it looked a deep mark. The bait was fishing at about 15' down. After no more than about one minute the float slid away and I tightened into my first pollack of about 2lb. As usual a good scrap on light gear and was only lip hooked. A quick photo and back it went. Now when float fishing I strike fairly quickly as do not like to deep hook any fish. As a consequence I missed more than I hooked - and the missed ones were all wrasse as identified by the clean bite from the limpet tip.

I changed my hook to a 2/0 - a wider gape - and my hookups increased. The next fish was a plump wrasse of about 2.5 lbs, they really do hang on with light gear mind!!! After a few more missed bites hooked into my second and last pollack of the session, another spirited fight. After that it was all wrasse nudging up to the 3lb mark. I was really chuffed with the size of them. Only got two small ones

It was a really pleasant session. Had two pollack and about 10 wrasse in just over two hours and all were carefully returned. My last fish of the day took me to ground and I got hung up,as a result I snapped off and lost my last polystyrene float.Sob.

Well yomped back to the car and it was still the only car in the pier car park.Am typing up this report in our caravan on the Clash and hope to post it up tomorrow in Drummore Tourist Information Centre. Got a walk planned with wor lass shortly over Glenluce (brownie points never come in wrong). She wants to see where the River Luce runs in and I will be checking out the potential fishing marks !!!

This is your roving Mull of Galloway reporter signing off. Till the next time!!!

How light is "light" for you? Those fish would go hard on bream gear I rekon! (about 2-6lb line) :headbang: Landing them would be a bother though. :alcho:

I normally fish 15lb mono on those shore marks. Occasionally a very big pollack will hit your bait and you just have to be prepared.

This pollack went 11.25lbs and although I caught it from the boat we were within casting range of the shore . I have been bust off by very big fish from the shore marks. I gave a Rexy snog and back it went !
