Well you should look up old video's.

1st saw the footage nearly 30 years ago, anything up to 50 anglers all hooked up @ the same time, rods snapping, gaffs getting ripped out of hands, tangles galore etc etc

When stuff like that's going on I'm surprised the fishery is so strong. :astral:

You gotta think the amount of fish kept was a bit overboard. Each person would be taking home hundreds of kilo's of fish.

Have some guys never heard of "catch and release". Its the way to go if you want some fish left for your grandkids to fish for!!!

I know that this is an individual thing but I rarely keep a fish, just give it a Rexy kiss and pop it back :smiile:

For those complaining about the quantity of fish in the pic

Those boats take out up to 100 anglers & if you divide that number by the fish kept you'll find each angler only gets to keep one fishy each which aint to bad for the amount of $$$$'s those anglers fork out for the trip.

Nice one Dog Catcher, it makes it a "tad" better now. Is the fishery that is getting "hammered" sustainable????

Not trying to get political,as being an outsider, just wondering???

Here in the UK we have had fisheries/eco systems "destroyed" by long liners and commercial trawling :confused2:

I have a static retirement caravan in Drummore,Luce Bay,Scotland,UK and have seen the seabed "raped" by scallop(shellfish) dredging. Basically they trawl the seabed for shellfish destroying the coral/seabed i
in their wake

Is this a prob in Oz???

Not trying to stir things up lads but have you got any conservation issues in your wonderful country?

Have no idea how conservative those Mehican charter operators are.
If they've got any common sense they'd be supporting the industry which gives them their livlyhood.

Esp after losing the once No 1 Marlin grounds in the world due to earthquake many moons ago off Peru.

Cairns took over as the No 1 spot & for many years it was kill everything that got hooked, but the skippers up there have since adopted a release attitude to protect the fish stock.

Is this a prob in Oz???

Yep they call them leather jackets & in the past decade they've been in plague proportions, these fishys use their teeth to grind down reefs.

As far as poorer fish no's go ??

Well in my backyard it's safe to say that development has been the biggest prob & not the LFB boats that our licence fees bought out & it will only get worse with all the new landfill that's going to be dumped in the bay.

HHMMM....I got no probs with em taken 100 fish man....

Add this up.....

Average 1,200 longline hooks per night with average 1,000 livies per set....
20 nights per month
With 60 boats on the east coast of australia.....
Average 300 tuna per month.....
That little figure is
LIVE BAIT per year=14,400,000
Tuna per year=216,000
Hooks per year=17,280,000
Plus all the by-catch such as small black marlin, sailfish, sunfish, monster blue marlin, short bill spearfish....90% hanging dead on the line and cut off and wasted....
Then you got the pursein boats doing there thing...
Tuna rape (http://video.google.com.au/videoplay?docid=292415789344678923&ei=gQWZSI-RNZnorQPdnLka&q=+tuna+fishing&vt=lf&hl=en-GB)
How many fish goin in there?

Now them blokes on the charter more than likely took home a **** load of fish tho i bet the boat retains some to cover fuel, tackle and maintenence.....
The punters pay good money for that experience....
Commercial fishing is decreasing the chance of others to experience the same....
Charter fishing and recreational fishing is sustainable due to the governing bodies...
Commercial fishing is not and is destroying fish stocks...

100? I dunno about that. 20-30 sounds more logical for the boat in the link.

It's more about the expirience than the cost.

Let me ask you a simple Q.

Add up what it costs you to go out for a fush, factor into that equation how many times you've gone home fishless, tackle etc etc

Then co0me back & tell me how much that last feed you took home actually cost you ?????????

It's not about the cost if you have a love for the sport

Jeez steele, that's some slick maths you've got there. Average 300 tuna per boat per month?? 60 boats on the east coast making those figures every month?? If you can show me 60 longliners on the Aus. east coast making those numbers I'll eat 20 of them. Next you'll be telling me you found god at Randwick! :nopity:

Suppose you've never heard of Mother Ships nor did you factor into the equation that the tuna season only lasts a couple of months & the boat does other charter work hence the 30 beds ???

Suggest you do a count of how many rods are standing either side of the boat to get a better indication of how many anglers are on board & remember I've seen footage of what goes on in these operations

Ha...Yeah i knew ya would be onto this mark...hahaha...I know there aint many boats pulling them numbers and those figures are out of date but you surely remember them days mate???
As for the vessels well yeah loads have sold out or gone bust due to high fuel prices and poor catch rates so there probably isnt 60 left....And only a hand full of them skippers did the right thing....And proud to say mate you was one of them....:beerchug:
I will never forget you jumping into 3000 metres of water 90nm east of port macquarie to release unharmed a large Leather back turtle....:ohhh yeah:
And ya boat was the only vessel i didnt get hurt or fight on.....Damn miss that South Sea's 2.....
Here this is for you Geoff....:pottytrain1:

If you log onto the Red Rooster web page, you will see that they have a tag and release option, but the aim is for catch and fillet :D
It looks like that particular trip is their last reported one they made in November 2007 and it had 23 anglers on board. The Red Rooster lll is the mother ship, the mother load or whatever other mother you want to call it. If you look at the video, you will see one angler hooked up on 130lb Spectra with the rod laying on the gunwhale. I shudder!!! Anyway, he landed that tuna.
CNR, all those fish that you kiss and release, turn up dead. The kiss of death. :rolling laughter: (just kidding of course, but you can't impose your ideals on everyone. All fisheries are different. Look at the Govt with the gun laws. Some vocal 'greenie' imposed his ideals, and now we are overrun by feral, introduced pest animals, which have killed native fauna into extinction. Now they are after rec shooters to once again hunt ferals.) I say we should have a concerted effort to decimate the current leatherjacket population. They are the feral goats of the ocean.

yep the commercials r destroying stocks worldwide for sure.....
its old news that rec fishos pay more per kilo of fish, provide more jobs in different industires, and allow many more people to enjoy and share the resource than commercial operations do. so if the charter guys allow there customers to take as many fish as they have use for (within reason) then i have no issues with that.

but i guess everyone wants to eat tuna

some pics below of what happens every day at tokyo fish markets.

it cant go on @ this pace for much longer

Good question you ask Kamil,
as best as fisheries know, recs take many more yellowfin in nsw, between 50 and 350 tonnes per year, compared to around 10t per year at present commrcially.
HOWEVER, and its a big however, this massive drop in commercial fishing has only happened since 1997, when commercial catch rates had peaked at around 750 t per year..

it is estimated that the total oz catch is around 2000t per year currently.

http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/research/areas/systems-research/wild-fisheries/outputs/2008/972/status_short/Yellowfin-Tuna.pdf

however this doesnt include all the fish the japs took and lied about over the years that they were given licences to fish our tuna :2gunsfiring_v1::2gunsfiring_v1::2gunsfiring_v1: and they have only recently admitted to

but world wide, id have to say commercial mothership fishing is the current major danger, especiallyfor migratory tuna stocks....

I've allways said the rec fisho's do & think that assumption is pretty well spot on.

I also class those paying for a charter days fishing as rec fisho's & if they pick the right boat to charter with a knowledgable skipper !

Well you do the sums as to how many YTFishys those guys account for.

ANSA comps & IGFA pointscore days see hell of alot of fishys also being killed for pics & points, Stink Boats [Shark boats] are the ones I cant cop they'll kill YFT or Marlin just to grind them through their burley pots.

YFT must be really scarce @ present saw it selling for $40 per kilo 2day
