I have just got back from a week up at Happy Rock (Gladstone QLD) to fish in the Boyne Tannum Hookup.
Despite it being as windy as hell for the first couple of days, I still managed acouple of nice fish over the weekend.
Friday was blowing a gale so I was reduced to chasing switched off Barra at Lake Awonga, to no avail:maad: . Of all the boats there there was only 2 fish weighed in from the lake all day. One of 20kg I couldnt find them.
Next Day, windy again, went to go out to the reef, after 10 miles in 1 1/2 hours we turned back too rough, I was starting to get a bit peeved, all that way and still could not make it to the good fishing grounds:maad: . We turned around for another hour of being pounded to bits to an inshore reef where we managed a few Sweetlip and cod, as well as a few smaller mackeral that we would put to good use as a big bait if we ever got out to the reef. We probably would had of done OK if we had stayed a bit longer, but one of the crew was seasick so we headed in just in time to get 5in of rain dumped on us.
Sunday, our last chance. The weather looked OK. finally!
We headed out to the reef and put a few lures out to start of the day, 8 hits one small tuna and 2 7kg spanish mackeral and 1 3kg one. Found a good spot and started to bait fish, first a big floater out the back, before we had even rigged up the smaller gear the balloon poped and we were on , Hugh fought for a rather large shark for 20 mins before cutting it off at the side of the boat.
After that the bottom bashing went a bit quiet, so we moved to another spot, no bottom fish but the Tekota was screaming within minutes of anchoring, and a short while I had landed a 14kg spanish mack, and had a smile for the first time all weekend. As that was the last big fish bait that we had we thought that would be it. But the good old pillies came through, and the catch of the week was on . 15 min later I had a beautiful spanyard af 22 or23 kg, 20kg gilled and gutted. . :coool: SToked.
Then the weather turned bad again, so we headed in early. At 2.30 pm I weighed it in, the biggest so far in the comp. an hour later a 23.6kg one was weighed in, thats fishin.
