I

Sunday sounds like a good waste of time in my books, big swell, big seas, and a reasonable wind bom predicts 15- 25 knots winds...:ohhh yeah:...good luck

In this weather last year, drifting in 60m off longreef produced some stonker snapper to 10kg! Many of them i remember! Maybe try that?

One of the unbelievable things about some of the stories on the nightly news is that all the people that you see rescued or found injured or worse by emergancy services were the day before, safe, well and capable of making the right decision about their safety. And yet they call these "accidents at sea". I struggle to be reconciled with the contradiction in terms. I would have thought that if the woes of someones day job pushes them out to the mercy of 3 metre swells & 3 metre seas on the weekend, surely then it would be simpler and smarter and cheaper on the community (as well as the news service)to get another job....just a thought.

What do others think?

Hey Guys..

Went out for a beutiful day on the water..

headed out at 7.30... stopped back at palm beach at 8.30 for the ladies to bring us the bait i left in the garage (:ranting2:)

anyways, got out to valiant around 9.30 and did a few jig drifts, no luck.. so we headed out towards terrigal...

The wind was a steady 15 i rekon, and wasnt halling us. the swell was more like 2...

we got to terrigal and did a few reefs, with too many leatherjacket... (no lost gear however so not all that bad)

My old man got a hug seargent baker, bigger than i have ever seen, and after a few more reef fish we decided the waves and wind had picked up..

it was around 1.30 or 2pm when we decided to head towards broken bay wide, but as we got half way we decided to call it a day, as the swell picked up a bit more (peaking around 4 meters i rekon)

so headed back in, at around 4-6 knotts with a few lures out back..

all in all, good day out on the water, a little rough, but no where near dangerous....

(however if we had decided to keep going to BB wide, then i rekon it could have got ugly..

anyway, hopefully the next few weekends will be better..

but it was just good to gget out in the sun and get some salt in the lungs .. heheh.

Anyone else go this weekdn ??? any luck ?

I think those people are sometimes idiots... sometimes they are just pureley due to quick unpredicted changes in the weather...

Anyways, i think thats a pretty big assumation to make there that it would be cheaper to change my day job... as i have never been involved in one of these accidents at sea... And am touching wood when i type this, but dont think i will be in one anytime in the near future..

I know not to take my boat out in more than a 18 knott wind if the sea is 3m+ and must keep the boat under 12 knots.

If its up to 5m i wouldnt go out but if i was out i would know that unless the wind is under 15knots, i will have to trudge home at max of 6 knots.

If there is no swell, then i wont go out in over 20 knotts, cause i hate parking in a gusty wind... but if i can secure a spot on the fuel wharf side to park, then i am happy to go out, and have the guys at the club park the boat once the wind dies during the week...

but yeah if the seas are smaller than 3m, and the wind is below 20 knots i am happy days hehehe..

Anyways what i think i am trying to say is, assumation is the mother of all f*ckups..

dont get me wrong, i am not cockey at all, and have a great respect for the sea... but you do need to make sure you have faith and trust in your boat, and you need to know its limits..

this way as well, if you are out at sea and caught in an unpredicted change, you will know what your boat can take, and how to drive to get you safely home..

anyways,

i had a great day sunday anyways...

ciao .

Oh yeah .. hahaha, oh it was a good day out... just a pity there were so many bloody leatherjackets ..

it was weird that i was catching them the same size as the jig i was using...

i think i even sent to a 220g one and it only made the jackets coming up smaller.. hahaha

thogh when the bait made it to the bottom, at least we got some good reefies..

Hi woz,

I wasn't necessarily pointing the finger at anyone, least of all at you.

Having lost a few mates flying planes and driving boats and finding themselves at the mercy of the elements I suppose makes me twice as alert to the dangers.

Don't get me wrong, I too have ploughed through the big slop at 6 knots as a result of a rapid change in weather. But I think that if the synoptic chart looks iffy then its worth erring on the side of caution because unlike a skateboard once you are in it you cant jump off!

Its great that you enjoyed yourself all the same, pitty about those leatherjackets (the most written about fish in all recent reports)! - Lets hope the weather improves over the coming weekends.
