Ally Plate- Storms was right!

Well blow me down and call me silly, I wrote to Austral Wright Metals the manufacturers of the ally plate that we have been debating in the "Trailcraft" threads and asked them to confirm what constiutes "Plate" ally. Here is their answer:

"Thank you for your enquiry in regards to 5083 Aluminium.

1. 5083 aluminium is available in H321 temper, except in 12mm then the temper is H116.

Please see our website for data sheets on the tempers and their meanings for this material.

2. Plate is classed as anything above 3mm in thickness.

Trailcraft have also replied to another member who asked for details of the plate used in the sides and other parts of the boat. he got a detailed reply that confirms the ally used all of which is high tensile plate..I feel sure he will post that soon.

I also got a reply from Chris from Trailcraft stating the following;

Anyone still wants to carry on , there's an offer to get it all from source. But I suggest that personal attacks are unlikely to be welcomed.

To sum up, Plate is any product above 3mm, Trailcraft boats are made from plate, you can press Plate, Trailcraft has a press that presses the sides of their boats and Plate comes in a variety of tensile strenghts and tempers.

Now having learnt the facts can we all get back to "Peace in our Time"?

You harrassed DC into going after he'd said NO twice & when DC told Haji he was going to confront Trailcraft about their alledged Plate Boats Haji shat himself & pleaded with DC not to.

Just because Trailcraft order it in as sheet forn dosen't make their sheet any more special than the other boat builders they do this cause they haven't got the facilities to dead straighten the coil good enough for those sheets to sit true in their CNC machine.

And I can say all mono line above 3kg is high strength line , But you can say no 10kg is stronger.

And I have yet to see a responce from the manufacturer were the bottom 5083 Plate is being pressed and used on the sides. They have danced around the question every time , And you keep saying there you go Im satisfied. >

My whole question was about the sides not being the same as bottom ,

guys being a panel beater i know what is strong and what is not alloy ets is a lighter metal due to the air bubbles in it when u press it hit etc it compresses and this weakens the panel we are instructed NOT to do this to panels as it makes the panel 50% weaker so what is it doing to wat so called plate that they press cant be good to it would love to see it on some scales to see the difference in strength between the pressed and un pressed just a thought.:ohhh yeah:

In answer to your querie re the material used for the sides of my boat (3mm and hence by the ally manufacturers definition not plate) Trailcraft have confirmed that these are made from 5251 grade ally.

The data sheets published by Austral list the tensile strength of this material as follows:

0 170 - 215 MPa
H32 200 - 255 MPa
H34 230 - 275 MPa
H36 250 - 295 MPA
H38 260 min

In other words the product is still a high tensile ally.

Both 5251 and 5083 are recommended for the construction of aluminium boats.

I assume that the temper of the sheet/plate has more to do with the ability to form/bend it that the tensile strength. I assume that any manufacturer would pick the hardest temper that they can consitently shape/form.

It would be interesting to find out the specification for the sheet that Quintrex uses. Having read a lot of info on the subject by now I would not be suprised to find that they also use a high tensile ally product but being thinner can readily form it using rollers instead of pressing it. Also,the great looking side and bottom profile that they roll into their ally greatly increases the strength of the finished product whilst keeping the weight down. Regardless how they do it, no one would seriously deny that they are a very strong and well built boat.

Cliffy Danials the then CEO of Australs was a good friend o9f mine, we both retired around the same time, I got invited to all the golf games etc, & no one else in that Co's history except DC has managed to get cliffy off his arse & deliver a 2 ton coil of stainless to my factory late on a friday arvo after all his staff had gone home for the weekend.

The guy rocked up in the truck wearing a full suit collar & tie & that's how I'll allways remember cliffy.

Again Haji thinks he's onto something & instead of talking to the accounts manager @ australs he should have had the intellegence to speak to one of sales reps who are better qualified to answer any Q's.

I was over there in other week a few of the old faces are still there Douggy would've been able to give better input.

@nd mistake Haji made was he didn't contact a specialist alluminium supplier, Australs do very little in the way of Alloy their name line is Stainless.

it was the argument were the site lost 2 posters in Haji and Frank, Haji has returned and Frank has poked his head in since then but no were near the amount he has before.

IF the material is Pressed / how can it then be deemed not to be Pressed ???

maybe that will enlighten every one, because honestly it's not possible

there are many grades of aluminium & no matter which grade if its pressed its pressed & as has been stated it strengthens a panel BUT it also creates a weak point.

In the end ALL aluminium boats ( especially ones 5mm & under ) have the potential to crack through fatigue depending on the treatment it recieves & the care it is given.

For the record knowing Fed the way I do, I'll garauntee you guys what Fed does upon reading such threads ??

He goes for the owners manual for his motor & looks up the Trouble shooting pages, & if anyone has ever looked @ these manuals you'll know exactly wot I'm on about cause every answer seems 2B fuel.

Platy's are welded [stitch welded] that nicely you take out the fatigue factor in other words there's no room for movement of the plate, frames every 600 mm's then you have your stringers every 250 mm or so apart once stitch welded it leaves virtually no room for movement of the plate you're talking an area 600 mm x 250mm for the plate to move, logic will tell you it ain't going anywhere.

Some here are still scrathing there heads so I'll tell you's what I'll do so as you can see 4 yourselves the difference between plate & sheet.

I'll find some off cuts set them up identically then get up on the roof with a sledge hammer [around 9 meters] drop the hammer on each piece one @ a time & take pics.

Dont know when I'll get around to doing this only then will the twits who've claimed big deal to my comments really understand why some of us dont like Claytons Plate Boats.

FUEL problems are all you ever see or know :rolling laughter:

Fed Motors have evolved from those you have allways owned not everyone owns dinasaurs speaking of which I owned your current model motor in a bigger HP over 20 years ago now threw the manuals & motors in the bin where they belonged.

Wot your prob is you dont use logic @ all, you cant learn from reading about something in a book & you've got a better chance of geting hit by a Bus than solving probs using a manual.

You need to listen to what peeps are saying then ask the right Q's & not just jump into every thread claiming it's a fuel prob hoping one day you'll get it right.

Just like all those years ago when I fished with you & 1 in every 3-4 trips resulted in a non event cause of your motor troubles not once did I ever try giving you advice simple cause I knew nothing.

And when you used tell me that you knew what you were doing I had to believe you cause I was not in a position to Q you.
