Try near the aquarium. There are squid there year round, and yakkas and slimeys. You can catch them off the warf there. If you have a boat then the island off the middle of Balmoral beach is a sure bet (just sit around there and see how many charter operators pull up there in the mornings). A little burley, and small pillie bits on a small unweighted long shank hook should do the trick for yakkas and slimets. small jigs for the squid.

The smaller sizes are the most productive. Normally a pink is my first colour to try, then orange, green and blue. All in that order.

I know it may sound like crap, but I have found that the more expensive jigs such as the Yozuri work better than others.

Try the brown yozuri in 1.8 or 2.0. The yozuri's are properly balanced and more closely resemble the prawns that they imitate (thats why the brown works so well- match the hatch) For me the brown has out fished all other colours regardless of the season.....We all have our theories, this one works for me

i fished for yakkas off the yellow buoy off the north end of balmoral beach between the island thing and the rocks! we pulled up about 10 yakkas in about an hour but only one was small the rest were like 20 - 25cm? which is too big!! is there a smaller yakkas spot?

Is squidding productive at night?

More so at night than the day. Change of light, like sunrise and sunset are your best bets.

They were probably Cowanyong. Very similar to yakkas...but bigger, as you have found. I tend to find the smaller ones hugging the weeds at the base of that island. Get in close to about a depth of 3 metres and berley them up.

I agree!! I love the brown in the shrimp hunter 2.5 size. A squirt of prawn scent soon spreads the word
